The Now of Then

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To live in Manhattan most of one’s adult life is to see most everything… especially the opening of the door next door and the long overdue lunge for the exit and the living.

Poem Artwork

The Now of Then

So many days….

Dust fills heavy curtains pulled

New York Times unread

Keys of past dreams collecting dust

His pet fly caught in blacky’s web

His bed like a sinking boat

With nary a listless sail of escape

Only cigarette smoke

Floating fantasy journeys

But finally…

He did move

The shops were closed

Was it already the seventh day of rest

So many weddings and funerals finished

But above…

Barely one or two clouds left

Directions unknown

But purpose clear

Go

And so he did

Oh how glorious life became

He was being

Alive.

This third person remembrance resonates with me. Not because I had similar experiences in my formative years, but because the writer remembers details that many would never even notice. I'm very similar. A powerful image, reminiscent to me of Revelation 4:1. Enjoyed this. Peace.... r

One of your best. Simpler and very direct. I love the description of the apartment of the deceased, so true to life lived too long in the city.

"The now" portrayed is the hope of those who believe in resurrection or incarnation. I don't believe it happens except perhaps at our elemental stage where our elements and molecules become reused in the ever recycling of the universe.

But you certainly give hope to poets who "believe" and make that their life of poetry ambition.

Gratitude that there is a now to the then, the ability to up, leave, depart when it is time to go, to come alive again.
