Mesmeric Sifting

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

I believe we all go through our own personal discovery of who we are, what our destiny is, the purpose for our existence. Some of us find it in somewhat magical ways.

Poem Artwork

Mesmeric Sifting

It never asked to be named

Nor is there any remembrance of its origin

I carried its tenuous existence

As a detained rapture

Its illusive presence

Like a sifter of magic

Fairy dust of imagination

Always in search of…

All-night Automat food

Horror movies and popcorn

Dark pubs for a pint

And poolhalls emptying out

Into rain-slicked roads

And morning street sweeping machines

Strange partner, this

Leading a quiet life

Yet on 24-7 call

A shadow strained through

The net of my reflective nothingness

So many years passed

A succession of train stations

Until my mesmeric spirit

Whispered

“This is it.”

Gullible as my psyche had become

I got off at an empty platform

No town in sight

No sound to be heard

Only solid concrete

For my feet to feel purpose

The remnant dust of my making

Had settled and became

A nourishing cloak of reality

My armor of belief

I had thankfully found myself

I like what Elizabeth says about this, “following one’s intuition to a fault, to end up somewhere so right.” Lonely atmospheric setting, this. And the surprise is in the ‘nourishing cloak of reality.’ My favorite lines are: “A shadow strained through/The net of my reflective nothingness.” ~~ djl

We are all shaped by our environment as you clearly show some of your youthful pastimes in the big city. And then describe your progress in life to be like a train ride arriving at different stations. But it is only when you arrive at one where you are all alone that you fully understand who you really are. Perhaps, a pipe dream not realized the way you thought, but okay in the end.

Really love the images I saw in my mind as I read.

The images, even the stark ghostly one, are stunning in this poem of self-discovery. Well done, evocative.

"I had thankfully found myself." I read this as good news. A very visual exploration. To find yourself you have to think for yourself. And most certainly, Odinsan, from what I know of you; you are one who has always done so. Thanks for sharing. Peace.... rlc

Very descriptive of following ones intuition at a fault, to end up somewhere so right. At least that’s what I get out of it. Well done!
