Awash in the Currents of Time

Time’s insistence is such that it either befriends us or makes us the enemy of patience and trust. (Painting by Smith)

Poem Artwork

Awash in the Currents of Time

How joyful the awakening to a new day

Where one knows there will be fresh memories

Yesterday’s recalls readying for the archives of heart and mind.

How fortunate,

We of sentient ability,

Accessing our senses in overlapping needs,

Finding one may outlast another,

But knowing life’s sensorial travails and peace

Are there for purposes we often

Glean later in life,

Allowing the tides to mix and thrive

The vastness of the mind’s fathomless reach

And back to the intimacy of experiential shoreline’s lap and caress.

How colorful

This array of sensitive acknowledgments,

Where a floating feather across the cheek

Is no less an arrest than the splash of a taxi

As it crosses rain filled potholes on 8th.

To stop and take in the cacophony of urban growth

Is to here the symphonic jazz of honking horns,

Laughter and anger on the streets,

And the ubiquitous jack hammers for a growing NYC,

Where the ever-present odor of 6th Ave Sabrett carts

Crash with the wandering fragrance of a 5th Ave Tiffany perfume,

Drifting as such aromas do across subway gratings

knowing where there’s oxygen

life’s abundant sensations are rife with both excitement and repulsion,

as the eyes watch the air give flight and life

to a planet’s evolvement.

To remain sensitive to all

Is to chance the awakening,

And even the enlightenment

Available to those who allow,

Especially those who have a special

Sensory enhanced room or other environmental setting

Where silence prevails,

Where when solace is reached,

The currents of Time

Award us with the smile

Of knowing there is no end,

Only more beginnings…

Many more.

As time continues its relentless journey, your poem suggests that there are always new experiences that the mind can capture and then store them so deeply that one can hold them up as a fond memory of a sight, sound fragrance like when I walked past that bakery door in Antigua, Guatemala and had to return, enter and buy something scrumptious to eat.

It boggles me to think about what my mind holds of my long life so far. So much simply forgot as mundane. But it only takes little prod for an unknown memory like a song lyric to pop into my mind for me to sing or savor.

Your words awaken the "senses", Odin! Bring on all those "beginnings"!

Love ya!
