Power's Glaciating Scree

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Crisis Abates in Russia but Questions Remain Over Putin’s Authority
6/25/23 – Power to control multitudes of humans and territory is as old as Genghis Khan’s conquering more than twice as much land as any other person in history, bringing Eastern and Western Civilizations into contact in the process. And still they come and go. It’s always merely a matter of time until one emperor-like dictator is replaced by another.
“In many ways, Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, the head of the mercenary force known as Wagner who led an armed uprising against the military’s leadership for nearly 24 hours this weekend, punctured Mr. Putin’s strongman authority and aura of infallibility. Mr. Prigozhin’s blistering criticism and brazen actions called into question Russia’s justifications for its war in Ukraine and the competency of its military leadership.” – (New York Times 6/25/23)

Power’s Glaciating Scree

Our sentimental past

Our repetitious future

Bound together

By hope and fear

Continues as dangerous hostage

As captors prepare their next demand

Though some might shudder

Such ransom seems paltry

To Power’s hubristic blindness

Straining to reach

A wintery summit patiently waiting

Forever luring the determined

Upon these storm-scarred peaks

The shelter hut grins

As crystalized mistakes

Remain one’s host

Within its four walls

Stocked with wood

But not kindling

Packaged nourishment

But past expiration dates

A wedged open door

Enjoins icy gusts

Dancing their last-note refrain

To Hope’s frozen calliope dream

Once a carousel’s innocence

Now a whirlwind of fright

Many try

But hypothermic dreams take over

Delivering happy endings

Knowing not

Delusions forever satisfy

Evil’s model of successful failure

Those rules of romantic notion

Denouncing Truth as bogus

Such for many

Antiquity's legacy

This frozen journey

Today’s repeat of yesterday

This perpetual Phoenix

Ice-covered in its ashen nest of flaming contradictions

Affronts Reality

Like some whirling dervish

Of gluttonous Nature

One’s anomalous Leviathan

Aberrational cotton candy

Frozen on one’s tongue of childish deceit

But

Climb

Grab

Crawl

Go they

We

Us

Moral impotence bowing to

Control’s infantile persistence

Evil’s innocent drippings

Enveloping misguided yearnings

Into but another layer of

Power’s glaciating scree

Tomorrow’s fossilized history

Even though this has captured the whole world's attention, it is not what it appears to be. It was certainly a ballsy chess move that had more shock value than substance. Prigozhin, (once Putin's chef) thinking he could march into Moscow with 25,000 men, when Putin (according to reports) has hundreds of thousands of soldiers (and National Guard) at his disposal, would have been a fool's errand. Now, more than ever before, I sense that a tactical nuke is going to be deployed somewhere this year. Thanx for this cornucopia of images, and your poetic take on it. r
