Endless Circling of the Drain

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Substance Abuse Among Youth
Early drug abuse corelates with substance abuse problems later in life, and the most significant increases in destructive behavior appear to take place among older teens and young adults.
• 2.08 million or 8.33% of 12- to 17-year-olds nationwide report using drugs in the last month.
• Among them, 83.88% report using marijuana in the last month.
• 591,000 teenagers aged 12- to 17-years-old used an illicit drug other than marijuana in the last month.
• 8.7% of 8th graders have used illicit drugs in the last month.
• 21.3% of 8th graders have tried illicit drugs at least once.
• By the time they’re in 12th grade, 46.6% of teens have tried illicit drugs.
• 11.89 million 18- to 25-year-olds used drugs in the last month.
• 4,777 Americans aged 15 to 24 years old died of an overdose of illicit drugs in one year.
• 11.2% of overdose deaths are aged 15 to 24 years.
Having posted a similar poem in 2014, I was taken aback to read today’s stats. With so much reason to sustain hope in youthful potential (at any age), it is dispiriting and tragic to watch so many not care. (Photo by thisiscolossal.com)

Endless Circling of the Drain

Worn out youth begs off aging
Entreats mirrors to be broken
For crippling lifestyles to vanish
Even as will power to control
Wans with denial’s onslaught

In and out of mind’s pleasure dome go they
Blinded by self-sabotage
Sprouting seeds succumbing
To already weed-infested landscapes

How dangerous
This ever-cycling season
Where today’s sunshine
Remains so often chased
By one’s virulent storm clouds

How disheartening for some
Whose fresh opened buds of hope
Wilt with loving care’s absence
Rendering expectation’s foretaste
Ever desperate to survive
Their endless circling of the drain

They're becoming what most normal healthy-minded individuals fear and despise - stereotypes of all the soul killing current trends. Watching and listening to what's happening has become exhausting. The disparity between Light and darkness now is stunning. It's a sad reality that those who are deceived don't know they're deceived. It's the ones that see the deception for what it is, and resist it, that struggle the most. I felt your heart in this. Thank you for sharing it. r
