Being Anonymous

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As separateness seems to be the world’s normal today, the late-night Manhattan subway system back in the 60’s came to mind, reminding me of its unique ability to soothe rather than antagonize one’s feeling of aloneness with the way it could arouse sensorial awareness, self-awareness of who one was.

Poem Artwork

Being Anonymous

From a deep darkness,
dirt and ammonia waft their
ancient odors of industry
along tracks rumbling,
tunnel wind rushing forward,
raising anticipation,
quivering the space in front of me,
breakneck thunder coming to a stop
inches from my face.

Inside, the submarine feel,
metal ablaze with fluorescent green,
lighting my ride through darkness,
to somewhere… anywhere.

Such was my subway of grace,
enfolding me with intimate anonymity
while my identity continued its search.

Nothing like the New York subway, I remember it well as a student at Columbia. At all times of the day and night, blessed anonymity

Beautifully written. I always thougt subways is such an expectant way to travel. So many things to see between here and there! Especially if imagination is awoken with every new face that enter your sight. Where have they been? Where are they going? How do they feel? An entire book can be written about this. A lot of my old poetry that I wrote as a student of sociology came from inspiration I got while looking at others interact with eachother or just being deep in thought by themselfes.
