Betrayal

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It’s not only difficult to remain positive with the world’s war zones taking so many innocent lives, but for this writer, it feels irresponsible to ignore the opportunity to express empathetic grievances. (Image by Getty)

Betrayal

Truth be told…

Magic once reigned strong,

Its aura indomitable

Until reality exploded.

If tempted to be down,

Don’t be surprised.

Dirty as it is beneath the sheet,

Being alive you won’t mind the ground.

Haunting sounds of beds with rusty springs rasping

Will try and overcome the constant ringing in your ears

As bombs knowing only to sing loudly,

End each phrase with the tympany clash of death.

As you attempt some comfort

In this rubble of a bombed-out movie theatre,

The screen beckoning your will,

Its many memories gone,

Your eyes reflect only the burn and shrapnel holes of permanence.

The real-life bed of your lovemaking is gone forever,

Replaced by the evil hearts of inertness,

Where the only thing rising above the memories

Is fire,

The echo of wailing,

The smoke of what once was.

Gone is the rapture of love,

Destroying passion’s aliveness,

Infiltrating innocence with the notion that happiness cannot last forever.

As…

Like a tornado's rising funnel

Love’s reality is sucked into smoke's rising acrid odors of betrayal and hate,

Seemingly disappearing with all else.

It is ironic that history has been written by the winners of war with great glory and fame to the surviving soldiers but literally no mention of the defeated as mere inferiors that had to be eliminated in order for the great conquest, plundering, raping and land grab. Perhaps making the survivors slaves.

Along comes the poet and decides to give credit to the meek the mere lover with only a passion for love, changed forever by the brutality of unwanted war.

It is also ironic that the survivors are often very prolific and within one generation, by mere numbers, quickly outnumber the victors. Hence, the cycle may repeat again. And again. And again.

Why are we so hooked on war? Because we can?
