White Dust Memories

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We sometimes forget that with all the modernization of life, certain youthful experiences should never be abandoned, but thought of as landmarks in one’s personal history. (Image by pinterest)

White Dust Memories

What history lurks
below blackboard surfaces,
wedged in creases of eraser felt,
in between folds of holding trays?

How pristine we wiped clean
the dark window’s surface,
making ready the day’s learning,
future remembrance,
yesterday’s youthful bygones.

Like stars burned out,
disintegrating to dust,
time’s ancient knowledge
now finds its rebirth
in ones and zeros.

For a few…

The latent markings
remain black-and-white teachings
embe dded in rainbow dreams,
struggling to be remembered
in our hectic digital world.

For many, however,
such simple magic
remains enchantingly airborne,
knowing not how to disappear,
its white dust memories holding fast
as jewels in the mind’s treasure trove.

Always thankful for the 'simple magic' of yesterdays. Those memories that bring back feelings of warmth and goodness and remind us of how impressionable we were in our younger years. Enjoyed these images and your message. Thanx 4 sharing.

Jewels in the mind's treasure trove indeed. As a teacher for over half century, I do remember the old chalk and eraser days. Only yesterday, I was explaining how I used to run off paper exercises on some sort of copy machine, I forget what we called it, That I would type up on special paper, this before the days of the Zerox copy machine. The days long gone, but the memories still survive.

I have found old photographs can bring into sharp focus old memories in the dusty dimness of my mind. A few years ago my mother sent a few mementos going back to my birth clothes and statistics for the first couple years. Some words written on paper. Some documents. And some objects she collected after I stopped using or needing them.

But today's children have a photo record that will be on the Internet for a very long time of all of the activities, large and small, important or not, that they participated in, if only just selfies with others in locations diverse. When they reach the time of reflection like you and I, they can pull up a hologram of thousands of events chronicled by both images and recording of their voices. It will be very hard to have dusty memories for them.

Makes me wonder what life will be like in the next century if we survive to see it. And I believe we will and they will laugh at what we call science fiction movies today using comic book characters and children's toys as characters.
