Sand

Even with many uses, the erosion of the planet often ends up as but abandoned history.

Poem Artwork

Sand

Such a granular history,

This embroidered occupant of thirty-three percent

Of earth’s surface.

Minuscule particles of yesterday,

An unbounded and eternal testimony

Of life’s tapestry of remnant evolvement.

Such quivering of heat’s echoes

Moves into undulating waves of sky reflections,

A trickery into mirages of false safety.

A sky of coppered miasma

Creates sight-conjured twists and dancing

Into a burning labyrinth,

Often without tiring,

Often bending light into grotesque and frightening visions.

Such dust plays hide and seek with the aged dead,

An amorphous enigma

The counterpart of people’s trampling below.

Such becomes…

The handful of Earth’s ancient time machine

Seeking solace in one’s hourglass of aging.

While I think of the sands of time as the glaciers, rivers and ocean waves grind down what was once molten rock into sands that act like ocean waves in deserts with no water, you are referring to sand as a metaphor for knowledge.

The grains of wisdom portrayed in ancient books are all of the ruling, conquering class. But recently, through the ability to search massive documents hidden away by the rulers to learn the grains of yesterday that are truths buried in time. The results are astonishing and do not bode well for the claims of the ruling class to be right.

Those last two lines are haunting...saying more than words can say. Powerful images. I also like to think of sand offering the comforting, melting memory of footsteps leading us onward...
Blessings, Odin.
