War's Age of Anxiety

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

During the holiday season, it’s difficult to dwell on the negative aspects of the world, given all the hustle commerce does on the public. But… lest we forget, there is a serious part of the globe that is in what seems like perpetual war, perpetual anxiety, perpetual same-ol’ end-of-year continuance of wars. (painting by Hopper)
Having just watched the film, “Maestro” a biographical movie about Leonard Bernstein, I found myself thinking earnestly about what gave Bernstein his inspiration for his Symphony #2, “Age of Anxiety.” Like the Hopper painting, for many, there is only the contents of two canisters. Coffee for some, reminders of missiles ready to launch for others. Witness, a distraught woman; a denier; and of course, the isolated man of war-mongering mind timing out the next explosion. The server, like an angel of death, tells them what they fear most is going to happen.

War’s Age of Anxiety

Behind the face of smiles

There are echoes of screams

Tormenting the dreams

Where roads of the vanquished

Seem endless in their winding snarls of hate

I’m fine

You say

But beneath the face of smiles

Lurks the often-silent screams of despair

Awaiting the next missile destined to engorge

The fake smile with more blood of fear

Where happiness passes like water

Through your hands

Trickling into another bunker-buster crater of hell

Oh, how fragile the lie

Millions of people being eaten away with fear

Starvation of the other kind

Where human dignity is ripped away

By shrapnel and flying rock

With no amount of food

Staving off starvation of the heart

For like a rollercoaster hill

One’s clicking up the incline of happiness

Often never finds the peak

The top

The ability

For some

Even the many

To smile honestly

Having spent time in a war zone, I can still feel the coldness, the emptiness of death by legislative minds that you portray so brilliantly. No hand-to-hand combat, mind you. Just bullet holes, and score-cards of "us" over "them." In the end, what was gained? Rubble, and grave markers, and heartaches that know neither victory nor defeat.

First off from reading this introduction and the following poetry, I went to YouTube to see that this Hopper painting was very integral to the explanation of the performance of Symphony #2, and Bernstein talked of that and his own work having ‘faith’ at its core. Like your poem here, the composition itself followed the ebbs and flows; the music he wrote sounded like your line“The fake smile with more blood of fear” the whisper, the scream and those opposites toggled. Your writing is every bit as ‘shaking’ as the most violent segments of Bernsteins’ composition: “….bunker-buster crater of hell”….The ‘core of faith’ Bernstein speaks of about this painting, this piece of music, must be in there somewhere, like an apricot pit, possibly falling into soil one day and then……. Write on! ~~ djl

Some remarkable lines in the verses of this studding end-of-year poem.

Where happiness passes like water // Through your hands

Trickling into another bunker-buster crater of hell //

Perhaps it is often at year's end that we find how much true happiness has eluded us and, as you say at the end "to smile honestly."

A starved heart, I imagine, could create all kinds of health and mental problems. Thankfully (as I've often experienced) an honest smile can thaw even the coldest heart, and at times create opportunity's where the power of wise words can help redirect a bleak or dangerous mindset. We're seeing now (on a global scale) what happens when the power of words fails. Thanx 4 sharing. HNY.
