Seasonal Enchantment

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It’s difficult to comprehend how reliable Nature remains, regardless of weather, war, or natural time change.

Seasonal Enchantment

Viewed from on high,

Once birch and ash amidst

Conifer shadow

Now engage the scree-sprinkled lowlands.

Further down,

Rock barren lessor peaks,

Yesterday’s snow-clad mysteries.

Swirling fall leaves

Sprinkle shimmering sun’s dalliance,

A fractal rainbow suspended terrace to terrace,

Stair-step tiered switchbacks carving mountainsides,

Having yielded long ago

Its blueberries and acorn foraging.

Still further down…

Creeping slowly,

The brambles,

Nature’s love-thorn creepers,

Enfold meadow where grasses bend

With wind calls to the basin.

Tundra’s home

Dog barks echo up to

Mountain’s pinnacle silence

As breezes search out an eagle’s lullaby nest

As far below a lake’s rising fog

Makes mystic the surroundings.

From further beyond,

Sinking light of dusk signals early stars on high,

Reminding existence, both high and low,

Creation never dies,

It merely evolves.

How mesmeric

Nature’s season-to-season enchantment.

Your prosetry today reminded me of so many natural scenes that I have seen in my travels and locations where I lived. How the seasons changed things, but always brought on surprises and beauty in almost every season, regardless of location. The power of nature to beguile and amuse us is endless.

A mere 53 years ago, I was a student in a crash instructor's course on the subject of how to talk for hours on seemingly mundane subjects. The title of that day's agenda was "There are no boring subjects, there are only boring instructors." Each student's task was to draw a subject out of a hat, and deliver a breathtaking oratory on how wonderful it was--and how humanity's survival depended on each your presentation of it. My subject, pulled out of the hat, had to start within 5 seconds, was "a match box." I swallowed hard, then began and ended my presentation in about 15 seconds. A lieutenant followed me with an equallylimited subject. He talked for over an hour and had everyone rolling in the aisles with laughter and tears. He was standing on a table, making faces at the TV cameras, cracking one-liners, and generally having a great time.
Odin, you would have made a great Department of Defense instructor.

Such a keen eye with what nature has to freely offer and such specificity of detail. It is there all around us and we behave as if we don't care; but the poet cares and raises our awareness to what the signs of nature tell us.
