Longings

Whether on a mountain trail, or a crowded subway, aloneness is no stranger to introspection.

Poem Artwork

Longings

Accepting aloneness as a plateau for self-realization

Allows blocked channels of one’s senses to feel open for cleansing.

But…

Longing for intimate contact,

The kind that demands little if anything in return,

Knows that thoughtful approaches require abandoning carelessness.

Longing for reality that compares favorably with dreams,

Remains a challenge for imagination.

For to hold firm to dreams as comfort achieved

Is risking dreams to disappear and die.

Such a loss is akin to the once-singing wood thrush

Now with broken wing,

Unwilling to express melodies,

Unable to fly.

And we of aloneness…

Longing to float above the hate and despair,

Experience vibrations of anticipated fatigue,

As the worn-out efforts to create world peace

Has failed for millennia.

And yes…

Longing to be as one with Nature’s Forest of life,

Where squirrel and deer co-mingle with trees and other biodiversities

Compete harmoniously for ecological niches,

Driven not by Man’s obsession with war,

Or its companions,

Loss and defeat.

Oh, if only…

Music can remain my refuge,

My means for processing actuation

As I discover being alone may well be the secret of invention,

That place where ideas are born,

Where longing can find solace in quiet refuge,

Embracing the Yin and Yang of living,

The paradox of togetherness.

Somehow, I sensed that my recent poem may have influenced you in your posting of this one.

But you went much further as I'll always expect from your deep thoughts about what you are presenting to us. Leaves us longing to read what you will write next.

"And we of aloneness"... It's become glaringly evident (to me over the years) that people alone and unloved, who have been blessed with a gift, often work hard in silence. If one could give half to others what they give to themselves, perhaps then 'aloneness' could be lessened. It's one of the foibles of being human; we struggle (and often become chronically self-centered) to make sense of our own dysfunctions. The Creator put in each of us the need to be loved and respected. This is irrefutable. But in order for that to happen to you, you have to make that happen for others. Thomas Jefferson said it well: "if you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done." I wish you well. An honest introspection that spoke to me. Peace...

I love the expression of hope found in the final stanza, where the solitude of being alone finds its counterpart in the paradox of togetherness. Well expressed.
