War's Unsatiated Roots

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It seems that reading everyday headlines is obsessed with maintains its hold on fear, i.e., An ISIS mass shooting in Moscow, conflicts in Eastern Ukraine and Gaza. China and Russia’s veto of the UN resolution for a Ukrainian cease fire, Haiti and gang warfare, Sudan’s continual war and displacement of millions, et al. Remaining conscious, one is struck with how patiently Man awaits each new season for planting and irrigating war and death. Makes one wonder why we choose to always remain watching… (Photography by Sarolta Ban)

War's Unsatiated Roots

Throughout the night
Maintenance sentries clocked by the hour
Sprinkle roots to spawn further
Their call of duty arcing

In a different time zone
Thousands of mind-miles Eastward
Bombs and tracer-glow
Arc a different earth
Arid with history’s human mulch
Filling lungs with particles
Dust of bones and flesh
Fed but poison for lifetimes

How sad
This thing called war
Where daily irrigation of its roots
Seep ever deeper into the erosion
Cycling seeds of hatred and ignorance
Spawning more perpetuated habit
Making yesterday’s roots of life
A planet’s mere waiting game for
Tomorrow’s necrotic death and more

Roots of unsatiated gluttony.

Here's to ya, Odin! War is a leper and kills anything it touches. I appreciate your words.

Love ya!

War seems to have taken on new dimensions with the likes of Ukraine and Gaza with whole cities routinely and systematically laid waste with civilian populations devastated as collateral damage. And now, with the arrival of AI, things could get worse, millions could be killed in the blink of an eye, according to new reports. "Roots of unsatiated gluttony indeed.

Yes, we all feed on the roots of war. The hatred is so intense and the revenge that comes with new generations seems to want to keep war perpetual and grinding. Greed making most people subservient and beholden (loyal?) to despots and dictators who have to be overthrown before the people are free.

The good news is, by this time in the earlier centuries, many more people had died in war, famine and pestilence. Until we can find a way to get people from hating and killing as a result, we will have trouble eliminating war. The nuclear genie is a good example. The United States stopped Japan from fighting and he became a rather peaceful nation. But many other warlike nations have picked up a bomb and can now use it to threaten a nuclear world war.

In 1924, thanks to the telephone and telegraph, even small town newspapers had lurid headlines of what was happening around the world. Currently, the stock market was booming and everybody was buying stock who knew how to do it through brokers.
