Beautiful Sadness

As many of us know, the healing of grief takes time. With patience, such emotional juxtaposition become a paradox. (Painting by UIB)

Poem Artwork

Beautiful Sadness

For a few,

Sadness carries beautiful upon its back,

Making a harmony of wonder and grief.

Through my window,

Light splays through the apple blossoms

Creating a delicate lace joining pink to white,

Comforting my abrasions of the mind

Reaching to heal with the purity of an honest heart.

The breeze gives flight to the petals of preparation,

The fruit of delicate foreshadowing

Making ready its patience,

Like the allowance one gives forgiveness

To flourish in light’s increasing warmth for growing.

Yet…

Constant remains the ache of loss in the next room,

The next song,

The laugh of yesterday’s togetherness.

Beautiful sadness

Is knowing even though adrift,

Horizons beckon the journey continues.

For like the flowering petals drifting away,

The nourishing fruit of life’s tenacity

Bids welcome to

Beautiful sadness becoming a graceful resplendence.

You have written a literary Swan Lake here, Odin. I hear the most graceful poetry in these lines that I’ve so-far read of yours. The prominent line for me is: “Sadness carries beautiful upon its back,” — for what instrument can convey sadness or longing more effectively than the gorgeous voice of the violin? Sad and beautiful. Hurts so good. The way in which the significance of the blossom is portrayed “..fruit of delicate foreshadowing” — and “….petals of preparation,” points to the title’s dichotomy and then ending with a sweeping positivity. I love it! ~~ djl

It's true. There is a connectedness to the conundrum of beautiful sadness, as in the expression waiting is beautiful or absence has its own fulness. The way in which opposite thoughts complement each other is its own form of enlightenment. B beautifully expressed poem.

I agree with you that sadness can be beautiful. Even the dismal dark day changes the landscape color into a more vivid view than a bright sunny day would, where the sun makes it hard to see the beauty as we squint just to see.

BTW. You mentioned paradox about the image. As I looked closely at the painting that is clearly Impressionist, the blossoms seem to merge with bathers on a beach in a way that makes it difficult to tell which is which. The genius of the painter is thereby revealed.
