Regret Not

“Never regret what you don't write.” – Abraham Lincoln - (Image by Nastco)

Poem Artwork

Regret Not

Yesterday was necessary.

Might it have been a good day?

Perhaps it was a downer day.

To accept it

Is to know you understand

It was your day,

Your growth,

Your hurt,

Your joy,

As all days are just as they should be,

As you need them to be.

Do you persuade

Or

Influence?

To be persuaded

Is to risk losing your ability to think for yourself

And thus

Captured.

To get poked

Is to be influenced.

To think

Is to consider something in a different way.

Regret Not

Reject being who others wish you to be.

Find the genuine you,

Even as you discover self-forgiveness.

Safeguard your growth

To dwell on the past

Is to prevent the honest outcome of that new experience

Which awaits around every corner.

And don’t forget what Lincoln said…

Write about it.

Well, I totally love this one! It pops bountiful truth. It is rich with clarity and encouragement. Especially potent is “Safeguard your growth”. For that one, I’d make room on my arm among the tattoos I don’t have and I’ll never get. But still. Those last two lines affected me as though I was watching your fountain pen write them and swing the ink forming those last three words in a sweeping, flourishing finish. Thanks for that ~~ djl

Odin, this is one of the best and most important thing I've read in a while. Thank you for sharing.

Once again you made me think… That's good. I never wrote a diary, perhaps because I was too busy being physically outside or inside the house to stop for a few minutes to write anything down. But I did start writing letters home, about once a week, when I left home at 18. Later, I wrote a detailed annual letter to family and friends when I found signed Christmas cards without even a note very disappointing. Unfortunately, reverting to those annual letters to write much of my autobiography when I shouldn't have.

I've had several people tell me that they wanted to write, "My story." When I offered to help them, they told me they weren't willing to write anything down or to even sit down and work with me many, many hours in order to write anything other than a single page. I still cherish the few pages my mother wrote about her young life that she told us, "Don't share with anyone." Oh, how I am tempted to post it here. Perhaps after my older siblings die if I'm not already dead. ;-)

Like I always say… Write it down and Write on.

A brilliant "take" on what we don't write, what we should write and what we do write. Love the Lincoln quote. A poem inspiring one to write.
