 Time’s Lament

Time’s elegy reflecting,

Holds firm the memories slowly disappearing

As time’s longevity seems to bemoving backward.

The church door askew

Allows but a crack for the curious to peer in

Or for the fearful to peer out.

The hearse parked out front

Idles away its remaining drops of petrol

As its tires flatten oh so slowly.

The old woman hobbles at the crosswalk,

Holding tight the leash to her seeing-eye dog

Leading her back and forth across the walkway

As she incessantly shushes her four-legged companion

Who never makes a sound.

Across the street,

The neighborhood watch lady no one ever sees

Fingers the tattered window curtain,

Perhaps aware that a sudden move

Might cause the remaining threads to give up.

Amidst the cacophony of city noises,

A deaf boy on the roof

Conducts the clouds overhead,

Orchestrating the movement into imaginary sonance.

A feeble elderly man

Drags a ragged rope and wooden chair into the backyard

Looking as if he wants to hang himself from the overhead limb.

Instead, sits and continues braiding the strands of rope,

Humming to himself as he lets time tick backward

To his youthful togetherness,

His long-ago aliveness,

His willingness to lose track of time.

Such is the repine

For memories fading.

Your prosetry gets better with age. Practice makes perfect, I guess. Time seems to be on your side.

Just today while getting some sun and contemplating clouds passing lazily by, I didn't try to orchestrate them. I saw a small plane flying high overhead, not making a sound. But I kept hearing the rumbling of jet planes out of Hobby Airport headed for points west. Because of the delay, by the time I hear them, they are gone. So I looked intently at the sky and sparse clouds hoping to catch an airliner silently slipping across my view well before its thunderous roar reaches me.

For at least 15 minutes I watched without closing my eyes or dozing. Nary a plane like I have often seen before. Is time fooling me with all these missing planes making a lot of noise?

Indeed, time is an ever-present construct that is as simple as apple pie and as complicated as quantum physics and what it all might entail. All we can do is observe the passage of time as you have done in the verses of this poem to see what it has done and where it can take us. Time, one of my favorite topics to write about, and to read about. Well done.
