Evolution’s Stronghold
From mountain rock to valley scree
The journey begins
High atop a rugged peak
Where the air thin,
Calm,
Temperamental,
Or violent.
The mountain summit stands resolute.
Time’s sentinel.
A carving of wind and weather
Ushered in by the relentless march of seasons
Holding its ground steadfast.
The pride of its monument endurance
Constantly on display.
But stone is vulnerable
Yielding to the whisperings of erosion,
The many visits of rain
Ice
And sun.
Piece by piece, rock crumbles,
Fragments break free,
Tumbling down gravity’s persistence,
A dance forward from mountain rock
To valley scree.
Nature’s journey of transformation,
Where becoming something new,
Remains still segments of the whole.
On the valley floor,
Scree lies in a scattered mosaic of the mountain as sire,
Each stone part of the story
Where fragments of memory
Form a tapestry of inevitable change,
A testament to the workings of time
And the layered beauty of impermanence
As it continues the cycle of sharing
The Grand Plan of Nature
Allowing the strongest shades of evolution
To eventually let go.
The Appalachians are much older than the Rockies, and it shows.
