Ivory and Ebony
Across the room,
My eyes and ears imagine
My fingers dancing across the keys,
A silent conversation,
Between ivory and ebony,
Sharing memories where younger hands
Were once part of the exchange.
Each note, a vibration of touch,
Where lingering waves of feeling,
A melody of recalls,
Woven into a tapestry of silence.
The piano sings with yesterday’s conundrum of joy and sorrow,
Of musings lost and found,
Voices flowing through a tributary of emotion,
Where the quiet realm of gratitude
Bows its head in solemn respect.
In the stillness,
The keys wait,
Patient and poised,
For the touch that brings them to life,
Holding the promise of music,
Of high and low note stories yet to be told,
A symphony of infinite movements,
Captured in the space between imagined sound and silence.
On the other hand, I've always enjoyed both the vocals and the keystrokes of the piano men/women who are virtuosos at the nuance of combining the sound of the keys with the sound of their voices from Ray Charles to Alicia Keys, to name only two.
But I also enjoy the most gentle or harsh piano interludes like the intro to Westworld with its haunting metallic sound of a player piano gone AI.
