Authenticity's Undaunted Pride

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

EveyEvery day, people are challenged with overly ambitious play-acting at what they are not. Learning to manage ambition is no easy task, as it is often influenced by covetous longings and greed.

"Unveiling Authenticity - This abstract image represents the journey towards living an authentic life. A figure steps away from conformity, removing a mask to reveal a true self that shines against the backdrop of enlightenment and personal growth."

Poem Artwork

 Authenticity’s Undaunted Pride

Parents with hearts heavy and hopeful,

Hire guardians of knowledge,

To sculpt their children’s futures,

To chisel away the rough edges of average.

In the dim glow of desk lamps,

Children labor over equations and essays,

Their minds tethered to expectations,

Their spirits yearning for freedom.

Their tutors, with patience and precision,

Unravel the knots of confusion,

Weaving threads of understanding,

Into the fabric of young minds.

Yet…

Beneath the layers of learned facts,

Mediocrity whispers softly,

A shadow in the background,

A truth unspoken, unseen.

For in the pursuit of perfection,

In the race to outshine,

The essence of an individual’s reality

Is often left behind,

Adequate ability being labeled as mediocre.

And so, in the mindscape of quiet desires,

Where dreams are polished,

And courage of the authentic

Find solace in being all they are,

Ridicule of being merely adequate remains,

A silent attachment,

Hidden but never gone.

Even as the tongue of Ambition’s whip cracks,

Challenging Adequate as a paltry acceptance

In the dance between the two,

A delicate balance forms.

Dreams meet reality,

Possibilities are born.

Ambition pushes forward,

Eyes on distant stars,

Competency holds its ground,

Having found purchase in the now of its reality.

Together…

A compatible life of lows and highs is woven,

Where dreams are pursued,

And the courage to accept the goal,

Having realized an authentic self.

A pretty hefty subject. Most people, including me, are generally mediocre. We have not been able to break through and become famous for something. I believe what you are trying to put across in your prosetry is that parents should never try to buy excellence in their children, but allow their children the freedom to choose where they want to go in life and they will exceed far beyond their parents' expectations.

But we all can't be rich, excellent, or successful. As you have wisely counseled me… "Everyone possesses talent." We cannot waste time trying to joust with windmills of mediocrity while we neglect our talents. Unfortunately, the cog wheels of business and industry are looking for round pegs to fit their round holes. Some reach that place in life and then find they are bored to tears with their mediocre lifestyles while AI does all the heavy lifting.

The possibility is there, but the reality of identifying the authentic self is difficult. Indeed, many people live false lives and present a false front, the ability to live in freedom and truth a near impossibility in this day an age. A thoughtful poem.
