Pain

‘There are two kinds of pain. The kind that hurts. The pain that alters. – Denzel Washington.
Another paradox allows us some choice in the way we absorb the hurts of life.

Poem Artwork

 Pain

Pain as explosive hurt

A wound that bleeds, raw and red

Is a pain that hurts

A sharp, sudden shock

A knife’s edge slicing through the calm

A scream that bounces about in the silence

Like a fractal breakdown of spirit.

Pain that alters

Pain that alters is a slow, steady burn,

A burning ember that reshapes the breath of life,

Hushed tones that linger in the mind,

A scar that tells a tale, deep and old.

Everyday hurt

Pain comes in many shapes and sizes,

A storm, fierce and wild,

A tempest that leaves destruction in its wake,

A creation of chaos,

A flash of lightning,

A tear that falls hot and heavy.

Pain evolved into lessons

Altering’s river is a winding and long journey

That carves new ground for planting,

A landscape of harvesting,

Wisdom that is earned.

And yes…

Tears will dry, leaving strength behind,

Just as both pains are real,

Each experiences truth.

One is a moment

The other a lifetime.

One the wound

The other a transformation.

Such is the inevitability of

Creation’s human experience,

Pain patiently waiting in the shadows.

Very interesting the way you approach pain from every aspect of it. Especially the life altering pain. Unless we are addicted, or attracted to pain, one of life's lessons is to avoid repeating a painful experience… Basically, learning what not to do.

Some handle it well, but for those addicted, it can be a downward cycle leading to early death. For example, I was surprised to hear that Ray Charles was addicted to heroin most of his life to endure the pain of having to live with blindness and being insulted for being black by ignorant people who took advantage of his blindness. Why he insisted on being paid in dollar bills so that he could be sure that he was getting the right amount and not cheated.

One thing about being paralyzed that is surprising. Much of my body is numb to the touch. Therefore, doesn't feel the pain of a cut or being burned. This can be very dangerous or it can be helpful, depending upon the circumstance.

A fascinating take on pain and how we can use its inevitability to make changes in our lives. An important topic that needs to be explored, especially in this day and age when there is so much pain. Such fine work here for readers to absorb.

Incredibly profound, wise, compassionate, calming. uplifting, humane, and worthy of being read again and again.
