Toxicity's Antidote

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Many of us have had relationship-loss experiences with siblings, children and particularly partners sometimes ill chosen. Still, to come out of such a relationship with love of life still intact, is to allow rumination on the experience that might truly be exactly what you needed at the time. Some prosetry exploration of positive results. (painting by Andre Kohn)

Toxicity’s Antidote

Heavy with the weight of unspoken truths

Are the lingering shadows of words unsaid,

Where intimacy’s whispers once danced like fireflies

In the quiet corners of our shared space.

There was a time when your touch, once a balm,

Became a flame that emitted the heat of hidden intentions,

Each caress became a reminder of the molten chains

That once bound us in our personal swirling dervish excitement.

The eyes that once wept sparkles of genuine light,

Became like an arid desert of manipulation glow,

A duplicitous love,

Where masks once secure,

Evolved into precarious falling expressions.

There came the time…

When promises,

Like fragile glass,

Shattered under the pressure of fantasy,

Becoming its own reality,

Where each shared a testament

To the lies we told ourselves.

Then…

In the silence that followed our disagreements,

I heard what was perhaps never meant to be,

Toxic affection attempting to become permanent

In my heart’s gentle echoes of love,

Reverberating with compassion and sympathy.

In retrospect…

I must give you credit,

For in the ruins of our relationship,

You grappled for the courage to admit,

Accept,

And ultimately exercise your abandonment of the vows.

Perhaps it was your vanishing

That gave me the courage

To find the light beyond the shadows,

Reclaiming the right

To

Simply

Be

Love,

Passion’s antidote for any malice of heart.

A fascinating compilation of what things could be and what they could become, all in the name of love and intimacy. Some memorable lines in this poem: "Where intimacy's whispers once danced like fireflies."
and "Where masks once secure, evolved into precarious falling expressions." Yes.

Indeed, non-attachment leads to freedom be it two together or apart.
Yet, the chain of pain binds us until it is broken and one can fly, untethered, once more.

A true confession if I ever read one. I'm glad you came through all of that emotion well.

Several of my loves never really got going before they ended. My only short marriage ended primarily because of her misconceptions of what our marriage would be like and some resolved issues from her prior life and family. I was used to being alone, and adjusted quite easily.
