Mortality's Delicate Balance

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Mortality is with most of us for a long time, and then, we move on into a new realm of existence. There is so much to be grateful for… oh, my. (Image by Odin AI)

 Mortality’s Delicate Balance

In the quiet presence of dawn,

where shadows stretch and fade,

we find the fragile thread,

woven through the permanence of time.

In the silent density of night,

under the watchful gaze of stars,

 we ponder the vast expanse,

the delicate extent of our being.

Mortality is felt as a fleeting touch,

invisible with the wind,

moving us through the days,

until we fade into the infinite

and merge with the temporal timeclock.

To listen…

Is to hear the hushed cadence of the clock,

to feel the distant echoes of our life’s experience.

finding purchase like a grain of sand

falling through the hourglass of existence.

Each breath, a fleeting moment,

a dance on the edge of eternity,

 where life and death intertwine,

like lovers in a final embrace.

The heart drums its solemnity,

a percussive reminder of our transient stay,

as we walk the precarious line between the known and  unknown.

Time remains…

An unyielding force, marching with relentless precision,

marking the moments of our journey,

from the first gasp for breath

to the last exhale of a sigh.

Lest we forget…

Mortality’s timeclock constantly reminds us

that our lives will soon reach a finite day,

its hands moving ever forward,

 never pausing, never slowing,

Yet…

We continue to live in the spaces between ticks,

in the fleeting instants of now,

where memories continue to be made and lost,

just as dreams rise and fall like tides.

In the face of time’s unending march, we find our strength,

our purpose, to live fully, to love deeply,

to be grateful and forgiving,

to leave our mark on the sands of time.

You are writing exquisitely beautiful lines here, Odin. I am realizing how long I’ve been away. These ribbons of graceful thinking are good medicine, like flute and cello strings, like first morning’s nutty-good coffee and the gratitude that jumps off the page of other writers’ writings. Thank you* ~~ djl

A bit repetitious, but deeply probing the finite nature of all living things, including us. Doctors like to tell us there are hard have only so many beats and our lungs only so many breaths.

Something everyone tends to contemplate as they grow older.

"As we walk the precarious line of the known and the unknown," a recurring theme that I have often dealt with. This is the kind of horizon that I can easily live with and couldn't live without. A fine poem on a profound topic. One of your better efforts.

Excellent poetry, and very timely for all of us seniors. How we spend our time daily reflects who we are to our family and society. Lately, I have watched several YouTube videos about near-Death Experiences (NDEs). Practically all who have had this experience admit they don't want to return to their old bodies. Some have hovered over other rooms and returned to tell precisely what was said privately. Others have visited children in their families that they never knew their mother aborted. This makes one wonder if there is more to experience in the afterlife. We know for sure that time will eventually tell. Thank you for sharing! JMD
