To Be Different...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We read everyday about a situation where a large number become an image of one with all. It’s not unusual to read of a comparison to those who remain one with themselves.
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect” – Mark Twain

Poem Artwork

 To Be Different…

Is to be exiled by many

To know sidelines and corner confinement

To often suffer total exclusion from social exchange

To live one’s difference

Is to be of invisible armor

To carry not a weapon of reprisal

But an offering of a forgiving heart

To expire of one’s difference

Is to know steps of integrity have honored authenticity

To know that hiding truth of being

Never serves well the final breath

When eyes remain steady

Where heart and mind

Having dwelled in harmonic resonance

Now empower your exit

One that will be remembered

By those most in need of being

Who they really are

Such a rewarding journey

This different identity

Having avoided life’s often bon vivant forgery

Conscience remains at peace

Oh my, how I needed to hear this at this moment. It is true yet difficult, of that I can't deny, yet being real to oneself is something we must never sell out on regardless of the cost. Otherwise, we become easily led and pliable fools.
One certainly discovers their true and diminishing friends.
Fantastic and wise write of the power and might of Right

You wrote my life. While I loved having comrades on either side who were helping me with whatever cause we were doing… usually breaking new territory into the unknown, I often broke away from the madding crowd of rush hour slaves to all mighty money seeking a more real life closer to the Earth and our origins. Not just riding along on the inertia of the masses.

On the other hand, I saw Rupaul on Jimmy Kimmel last night and damn! If a little make up and sexy clothes can make a woman out of him to die for. Now that's being different. Will he become a target of the new rules by the ruining majority?

There are so many people who seem to be cast from the same mold, who want to blend in and avoid taking risks. It is the rare individual that realizes how important it is "to live one's difference" as you have succinctly put it. To be ostracized from the crowd is actually a small price to be able to live who one really is, especially if one is "different. As Richard said, such food for thought here in this concept.

Certainly, many peoples thoughts are other peoples opinions, and their lives a mimicry. As Albert Einstein posited: 'The person who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The person who walks alone will find himself in places no one has ever been.' True! But whether that's good or bad is relative to each individual. Being different is not necessarily being special. Personally, the most powerful and talented people I've ever known (through the decades) were part of a community of like-minded individuals who loved and respected and supported one another. I think you've touched on a subject here, Mr. Bateman, that needs a great deal of development. Thank you for sharing. rlc
