The All of Solo

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As we climbers might, trying to express the uniqueness of climbing is often met with disappointment. After all, words to objectify such a personal experience seems inept an exercise. But… (Image by Odin AI)

 The All of Solo

 I begin the climb

In the hush of dawn,

Each step like a caress on the mountain’s skin.

The path winds like a serpentine of stone,

Leading me to heights unknown.

Alone, I scale the jagged edge,

Each breath a testament to resolve.

The summit calls,

A siren’s song,

Reaching into the valleys of my soul.

Rocks resound beneath my feet, firm yet yielding,

Mirroring the trials I’ve faced.

Every slip, a lesson learned,

Every pull and lift,

A victory earned.

The peak, a distant dream,

Yet closer with each heartbeat.

I climb, not just the mountain,

But the fears that often anchor me.

In solitude, I find strength,

In silence, I hear my truth.

The summit is not the end,

But another beginning, anew

Yes…

For every peak I conquer,

Another awaits on the horizon.

And so I climb,

forever reaching,

forever stepping upwards,

Hoisting my body and spirit into the unknown.

What a rush, to be able to climb to the summit, literally, but perhaps more-so figuratively.

I find my own experience in your poem. What a wonderful glimpse of the soul and the many mountains it has climbed and must yet climb. My favorite line....

"In solitude, I find strength,
In silence, I hear my truth.

I can only imagine for I was never able to climb with just my fingertips and my toes finding just the right place to put my entire weight on to move up another 6 inches or so.

And the adrenaline rush when a slip occurs and falling on the safety rope. And then, it giving out and falling 1000 feet. The last free flight until the sudden stop.

I'm an adventurer but solo climbing was never for me.

Truth within truth. A metaphor and wisdom for life and the challenges we must endure and conquer, as well as the physical climb.

I was taken by a few things in this piece. Even though it's a personal reflection, there still is (IMO) a universal applicability in it that can easily resonate with anyone who continues pressing onward and upward in search of all those special things that elude the common man. Also, I noticed a lyrical balance in several of your phrases that I don't usually see in your work. Quite beautiful actually. Finding strength in solitude, (sans loneliness) is a gift, I'm convinced. Solitude is the soil in which great ideas blossom, and a place where the strongest souls are forged. It's a place you've found yourself in, and, (IMO) you're making the most of it. Enjoyed this. Well done. Peace... rlc
