Words Not Spoken

To know a man who spends a holiday celebration in isolation and silence
May be to know a man at his most truthful self. (Image by Odin AI)

 Words Not Spoken

When might the sound of words reveal little

When the silent form of their meaning

Be all that’s necessary?

Might it be

Words first thought with no sound

Be the essence of their meaning?

Can speaking often distort a textual need

To go a day long

Without speaking

A celebratory day without sound

A depth of thought that defies mere sound

May be the essence of language

The sign of silence

The sending of words

Too strong

Too emotional

Too tearful

To be spoken?

Such a day may be one’s birthday

When spoken words are but an effort

To be what one wishes to be thought of

Yet…

The silence of such quotations

May be more connective

To that which we yearn to connect with

That inner self of conscience

Love

Compassion

And memory

Silence speaks honorably of truth

Even if only known by one’s silence

What kind of thoughts might the aged writer have at this life’s end

As a new and different kind of birth date arrives?

I love your poem, Odin. In quietitude we find our self and our truth.

Amid all the thoughts on the beauty of silence, such an interesting question at poem's end about "a different kind of birth date" for the aged writer. Oh, how one can relate!

Deep thoughts about being alone. I have been alone for many years on my birthday and all major holidays which I do not go out and celebrate with others. When I celebrated major holidays with my family, everyone was of doing their thing and it was very little of us gathering around except perhaps to watch fireworks go off or eat an evening meal together like in Thanksgiving. In very early days to sing songs around the piano.

You and I both have the ability to go through whole days without speaking a word. But I find now that I'm using Voice to write this that I'm speaking all the time I'm merely writing what could be typed on the typewriter or keypad.
