Honesty Endangered

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

For many of us, the bombardment of dishonesty surrounding us asks we never lose our innate sense of integrity. (Image by Odin AI)

Poem Artwork

 Honesty Endangered

Nurtured with a diet of fear and greed,

Unlike non-sentient life

The populace that surrounds themselves

With a cacophony of distractions and negative voices

Seldom discover they’ve lost their solitary sentinel,

That quiet whisper known as truth.

Among the stalwart

The world that beckons with siren-like noise to get their attention

The soul of integrity resists

Even by a flickering flame

Standing tall against the tempest of deceitful pretense.

Such bravery knows well their convictions,

That like the tenuous fragility of glass

Such pressure may momentarily shatter under

The heft of delusional pretense

But among shattered shards,

There remains a reflection

Of a self unyielding,

Inviolate.

On paths less trodden

Such humanness walks alone, embracing the silence of authenticity,

Clad in armor of honesty,

The person is unaffected by

The masquerade of interchanging masks.

For…

When the disguised crowd disperses,

And the reverberations of falsehood fade,

Veracity remains a steadfast companion,

A flame undaunted in the twilight of the spirit.

I travel the same path that you describe. I try to be as honest as I can with others. Sometimes hurting them with the truth rather than feel that I have to lie in order to keep them from pain. I know that they will get over the pain quicker the sooner they know.

I get emails and phone calls every day from those wishing to make me rich with deception. Unbelievable how many have fallen for those scams.

And worst of all is a scam that is taken over our government with promises that are only for the very rich but seem like they will help the poor. Always to drive them further away from the starry heights of wealth. But whoever said wealth made you happy?

The simple, honest life you describe, is the healthiest and happiest.

No one seems to know what truth is anymore. There is no real sense of an "absolute truth" that is independent of humanity, something that the religions once provided. Now, everyone works from t he premise that they have their own personal truth that satisfies their own (ego) needs. A sorry state we are in, for those who abide by such notions. As you mention aptly at the end of your poem, "the twilight of the spirit."
