Poem Artwork

 Aging with Grace

How joyful to be living a priceless philosophy in one’s gilded years.

Yes…

There have been many slings and arrows to dodge

But also many unexpected gifts in this varied experience.

The mix of disappointment and joy

Makes arriving still in one peace

A surprising rewarding.

The streams of laughter,

The tears,

All make up the river flowing.

Days often stretch out,

Dreams chased and caught

By the canvas wide.

Life’s strokes of paint

Still drying,

Not yet ready for posterity.

A glance at the horizon

Is apt to reveal the unfurled wings of a bird.

Like a mirror of Nature,

One can feel the freedom

From chains of expectation,

As one soars high on the currents

Of self-knowing.

Along the way…

Companionship, that joint care of a garden in full bloom,

Its roots remaining deep and strong,

Even in but a memory,

Blossoming in a shared silence of distance.

Peace has become a tender whisper in one’s dreams,

The night-heart at rest,

The mind untroubled,

Respecting the reward of a life

Lived with honor and thankfulness.

A Journey is coming to its completion.

The golden time rendering a platinum closing

Where the soul finds the beginning of what might be ahead.

A place of warmth, visions illuminated with endless grace,

That place where every breath a song…

Even up to the last exhalation.

In this prosetry you covered every aspect of a life well lived. Flowing through good and bad with always an outlook towards the positive. Letting the negative be dealt with and then easily forgotten. Great lines like Diana wrote," the paint still drying."

I wish that you will come upon a distaff someone who just happens to be named, Grace, that you both bond with mutual love and respect to the very end. But if you don't, I believe you will do just fine.

After all, we are born alone and die alone. Except for me, I had to kick my brother out first, so I could emerge into this cold cruel world.

Ditto what the articulate Diana wrote. What a profound celebration of life as portrayed through the journey of aging, highlighting a sense of nostalgia with a sense of wisdom and that beauty can be found in the passage of time. Again, your final phrases sum it all up: "A place of warmth, visions illuminated with endless grade, that place where every breath a song...." So well done and inspiring, especially for us elderly.

Odin, this arrives to me this morning on wings in the sky you have opened here, image and language. First read through and I’m already adjusting my attitude towards this day and life in general. Because I’ve been following your writing for many years and expanding thought and awareness from your ability to write of the greasy dark alleys and now the “Peace has become a tender whisper in one’s dreams,” — well I can’t think of another thought or line more enriching than that one. Thank you. I’ve been submerged in the oil slick of what is happening to our species and the earth herself so quickly, so violently, that I have pretty much fallen off the map of optimism. I’ve missed reading about a dozen of your works here, and now can look in on them. I’m not alone in the off-map state of being, I know. But, thankfully I return to AD and find a place on the map where it feels like home. Thank you for that, too. This is a treasureful piece of writing. One word I believe needs adjusted “As one sours high…” — I think it was intended to be ‘soars.’. Carry the flame, Odin, it is surely in your hand. ~~ djl. P.S. My favorite lines are: “Life’s strokes of paint/Still drying,”
