Queen of the Night

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A weed by any other name would smell as sweet.
The bard chose a rose
But a weed deserves attention too.

Poem Artwork

 Queen of the Night

A Weed resigned
Its armored sentries
With barbed spines at the ready
Ensuring her nightly bloom
Her fragrance to sweeten the arid surroundings
As she dreams of the rose that might someday
Arrive as her prince in waiting.

Like so many beautiful and alluring city-ladies
Queen of the night understands loneliness
That urgency of connection
The touch of a nightly visitor
His velvet Corolla embracing
Her white buds of love and grace
Carefully folded under during daytime heat
Made ready with nighttime moon rays.

Perhaps luck will veer its breezes
Carry seeds of a Brigadoon Hybrid
The tea rose that thrives amidst arid surroundings.
She nods to her left
To her right
Assured by the sentinels keeping her safe
Along with Nature as her ever-faithful guardian.

How committed
These blooming weeds of the darkness.

Perhaps like I have noticed, the night seems somehow calmer and quieter than the day. The time when she can feel safe to come out and show her wares to the night owls who navigate by scent rather than brilliant blossom.

Ah such a queen of the night in the imagination envisioned, a feeling of loneliness intertwined with hope and resilience in the face of isolation. Such a powerful poem vivid and thoughtful.
