What If of Death

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Every life--whether as mountain climber in a bivouac, or monk before Buddha--finds moments to ponder the what if of death. (Image by Odin, Swiss Alps, 1966)

 What If of Death

Death’s Weightless Journey

Keep Safe

View from on high

Scree sprinkled deserts

Once birch and ash amidst

Pinetree shadow

Down into the bowl

Rock barren lessor peaks

Yesterday’s snow clad mysteries

Swirling fall leaves

Sprinkle shimmering sun’s dalliance

A fractal rainbow suspended

Terrace to terrace

Stair-step tiered

Switchbacks releasing mountain sides

Having yielded long ago

Its blueberries and acorn foraging

Still further down

Creeping slowly

The brambles

Nature’s love thorn creepers

Enfolding meadow where grasses thigh-high

Bend to wind’s call to the basin

Tundra’s home

Dog’s bark

Echoes up to

The rock pinnacle’s silence

As breeze

Swaying my bivouac’s lullaby

Makes mystic

Rising dust

Lavender fantasies

Fortress Lake’s misty fog

Lights of dusk

From hamlets beyond

Signal early stars on high

Keep safe this man

Keep safe

A beautiful cornucopia of imagery which resides and contrasts perfectly with this theme…

When I was a child I tended to climb every rock and slope that I could find. And as an adult, I often walked to the top of some mountains of some substance.

But I cannot imagine what it must be like to climb a cliff face without any prior placed cables or aids to grip. And be bivouacking on the side of a cliff face even more alien. Got to have guts to do that sort of thing.

Defying death with a remove and the relief of life when reaching the top.

Such an interesting "take" involving death, not an easy topic to write about. I am always a bit hesitant to write about death because certain readers complain sometimes about writing about this touchy subject that people nowadays don't like to consider, much less contemplate in any realistic manner, even though there is nothing more real than death, except perhaps life.
