Virulent Joy

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

“ ‘All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts.’ This Shakespeare quote summarizes how individuals go about their daily lives, interacting with one another.”
How egregious such interactions have become for many. (Image by Odin AI)

Virulent Joy

In the flower garden of duplicity,

where the roses bloom sweetness

while the thorns repel the takers,
a serpent's smile coils around the redness of heart,
whispering secrets of carnivorous delight in the shadows.

And like the wolf's fang-laden smile
as it watches the lamb stumble,
or the flicker of a candle in a storm,
hoping for the wind to snuff it out,

a raven’s caw echoes through the night,
mocking the silence of the moon,
the glint in the eye of the tent-preaching evangelist,

the followers of hyperbole fall to their knees in adulation.

And then there is…

The laughter of a  storm
as it tears through the township,
the smirk of the ocean
as it swallows the drifting ship whole,

a spider's weaving-dance of deceitful webs,
while the fire's crackle consumes the forest,
the obliterating smile of the chess master
as the opponent's king falls.

Yes…

It is the joy of the hunter
as the prey falters,
the spurious grin of the fox,
as it outwits the hound.

The whisper of the erratic breeze
as it topples the house of cards,
the gleam in the cat’s eye
as it toys with the mouse,

 the smirk of the sun
as it scorches the earth,
the chuckle of the frost
as it bites the skin.

A vulture's feast,
on the carcass of hope,
the dance of the flames,
as they devour the dreams,

the grin of the clock,
as it ticks away the final moments.

How undetected…

This realm of forever disguised shadows
where malicious joy reigns
in twisted celebrations
of another's pain.

Wicked. Amygdala vs. frontal cortex. One clearly defined best by the ‘other,’ making for a grand pairing of blood and roses. Compelling choices in illustrating this in picture and words, Odin. ~~ djl

What a potpourri of natural deceits that are used by predators to catch prey or by prey to escape predators.

We have evolved into the most deceitful of predators in order to survive and even thrive. Unfortunately, many cannot turn off the power they get from deceiving others and gaining wealth along with it. They're the ones you are targeting by this great work. As intelligent beings we know better, but we do it anyway.

A wealth of images here that highlight the unsettling joy found in destruction, deceit, and dominance and all of it found within nature. Wolves, vultures, serpents, all symbols of wildness in nature and cruelty, reflecting the power of some over others. The chaos evoked in the poem mirrors what is happening now in politics and couldn't be more appropriate. Nature is unapologetic, but human needs to take care and profit from the hidden secrets found within nature.
