Nature's Plight

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Some would argue that human narcissism has become so rampant, that consciousness of that which is not themselves is of less and less importance, even going beyond into total ignorance of the way in which Nature suffers, often making our self-aggrandizement so mundane as the threat to Nature is often on the brink of extinction.  Nature’s Plight

Consider…

Humans have multiple means of staying healthy.

Nature is subject to its own live or die week, month or season of the year.

In the heart of Nature’s abundance,

Flames may dance a fiery ballet consuming all

as leaves modestly utter their final lament.

Not uncommon…

Come storms of rage

As skies weep

And thunder makes known

Its ushering of soaking floods through landscapes

 often void of protection.

Nature trembles of wrath’s weight of unforgiving weather,

Anticipating human hands will return

With their often careless and cruel ignorance,

Scaring the earth with wounds unhealable.

Pollution’s overcast darkens the sky,

Nature’s cry for mercy unheard.

Rivers may run dry,

Parched and cracked,

Leaving thirsty roots without aid.

Gone are the days of dependable help,

When Man’s pre-narcissistic binge of irresponsibility

Was still to be born.

Yes…

We are caught in the relentless march of Time’s passage

Where trees age,

Their limbs growing weary,

Remembering their once towering canopy stature,

Now its life-giving partner of light and water but an anomaly of the past,

Its free-flowing elixir of vibrant sustenance now a distant dream.

Such crowds the land with overly-dense groves,

A tangled mess where plants versus trees vie for space,

Struggling for sunlight, for breath.

Such is the tragedy  of a silent battle unseen.

Now…

Mankind faces the massive ice thaw of climate change,

Where rivers swell,

Floods rush forth unbridled,

A deluge of Nature’s tears

Downpouring hopes,

Washing away dreams.

Above…

The sun’s embrace is obscured by polluted clouds,

Sending forth cold shadow blanketing of the earth,

Wilting Life yearning for warmth and gentle rains,

The life-support mission of sunlight and moisture

Remains a silent plea…

Unanswered.

Thus, for sentient beings,

View Nature’s suffering

As a mirror reflecting our own silent cries.

Different causes,

Yet pain  just as injurious,

A shared lament,

A universal sigh.

Yes…and there you have it…human Narcissm and
Ignorance…the careless way Nature’s
own consciousness has been ignored and cast aside…
resulting in the utter devastation described…
The partnership which must exist for the survival of our Planet’s ecology, for our ultimate safety and continuance, and our everyday wellbeing and appreciation of Nature requires urgent, urgent action and concerted effort worldwide to protect and rescue
our magnificent yet fragile Earth from mankind’s careless
allowance of her destruction…
We would do well to go back and listen carefully to
Our Native Forefathers and Mothers who understood
and respected and nurtured Mother Earth…and worked in harmony with her needs…

So true. I have long lamented the mindless degrading of our environment in so many ways for wealth and efficiency. The most insidious being an insistence on sterile cleanliness and comfort concern that destroys the very underpinning of all life with pesticides and herbicides.

Today, I heard the alarm go out for the return of sharks to the beaches in the Northeast United States. The result of conservation efforts bringing the game fish and seals back to the way it was when people weren't so concerned about sharks. Until one stupid movie made everybody afraid and lusting for more gore. Every bite breaking news now while over 100 die of diabetes every day, unnoticed in expensive assisted living homes abandoned by their fat, shark bait, kids.

A fitting eulogy for the flora life forms, including the elements that feed and flourish them. Nature shuddering under human ignorance, the Ents…communicating through their root network, their nature instinct, their intelligence. The vision of timber here in Pacific Northwest, loaded onto the trucks, the massive logs with hunks of bark on the stripped-down choice cut, like flaps of skin, being hauled off to the mill, stacked in their naked-down mountainous heaps at the dock, waiting for their ship to come in and put them in a place they would never have been. Awwwkkk! You have tapped my pain, Odin. That’s the influence of writing that begets writing. Continue…….. ~~ djl

The imagery of this poem, with flames dancing, rivers running dry, the weight of an impending storm all signalling the potential destruction of climate change that so many still try to deny. Nature's suffering together with humanity's silent cries remind us that our fate is bound up together with the destiny of a healthy planet. An important message that people should take note of.
