Destiny's Great Unknown

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Some argue destiny determines everything. Others take the position that free will is part and parcel of cause and effect. Some of us choose to own our own destiny, disallowing it to exist as an outside force. Still, questioning affords ever new perceptions. (Image by David Orias)

 Destiny’s Great Unknown

Like innocent spray atop a tsunami curl,
You ride your controlled serendipity,
Delivering surety in an unexpected twist,
Destiny’s setup for drama that follows.

Never satiating your alacrity,
You fish-oil-coat your barbed cunning,
Slipping lathered lures easily
Down gullible throats of anticipation.

For you,
Making another landfall
Is just another layer
Added to your flotsam-beach theatrics,
Designed like playful foreshadowing
For a planned second and third act dénouement.

Oh how you chortle
Amid your game of certainty,
Bedding the unsuspecting like a predestinate,
A loan-out reality guised in wet dream duplicity,
Arousing our trust,
Yet never awarding a curtain call
Of our own choice.

Quandary persists.

After all,
Like nature’s often sardonic casting,
You are the ever-floating understudy,
An ineluctable wave-curl in waiting,
An unrevealed power we know not of
Until…

Whether riding the waves of life
or climbing magnificent mountains
that challenge us to swim, to take chances
and discover life from an unexpected point of view.
While leaving the final act up to us.

An interesting take on such complicated and valued concepts as destiny and free will, concepts that all of us have to come to terms with in some manner and fashion. Personally, I think part of the problem lies in defining and understanding these two concepts. I some ways, our destiny precludes certain aspects of free will. Our destiny defines whether we are male or female, born into poverty or wealth, India or America, etc. This is part of our individual destiny that we have no control over. Then there are the forces of our lives that are the result of free will, choice and decisions make, whose consequences we have to live with, and that is also our destiny that we have created for ourselves. So, yes, an interesting topic and one that each of us must come to terms with.

In the middle of reading this about you and your… I could swear you were describing the manifest destiny of your arch enemy and my pathetic bastard at the helm of a splintered nation – world?

On the other hand, twins separated at birth and then reconnected much later in life, are found to have many similarities in behavior and direction. This would indicate that genetic heritage plays a very strong role in what our lives will be. Regardless of how much we may try to take charge of our own lives along the way.

My mother-in-law loved to say no good deed goes unpunished. Or everything happens for a reason. Today I’d say there are just wrong roads we find ourselves on and hours in it’s too late to put it in reverse.
