Dustbowl of Another Kind

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Many of us are familiar with the droughts in the 1930s resulting in the Dustbowl era in Oklahoma from 1934-1936in the 1930s. A different kind of weather (that of the mind and heart) is taking its toll in 2025. (Image by Odin AI)

Poem Artwork

 Dustbowl of Another Kind

Hegemonic power is disintegrating society into

Deserts and dunes of human Diagenesis.

The Physical…

Rain depositing foreign elements

Oil dependency slowly seals our atmosphere

Logging runs rampant with population explosion

A species slowly succumbing to the Sphincter acid

Of an acrimonious onslaught of the mind.

The Mental…

Too much nonsense

Makes synapses of the brain fragmented

Hate over love is becoming the norm

Compassion pales in autocratic greed

Noise buries silence

Dunes of massive language particles

Smother the contemplative process

The Heart and Mind…

Once a partnership

Now a rivalry

Creating friction of purpose

Sending daily crises into storms of micro-particles

Human arterial soot hampering the blood flow of life.

How Mountainous…

Value to waste is becoming

Misinformation crushing facts into

A foundation of misanthropic groundings

Its goal to becoming a salvage yard of crushed dreams

It’s only a matter of time

We are probably breathing microscopic particles of plastic.

The Sahara desert was once a very lush area that propelled the ancient Egyptians and other tribes to great wealth and prosperity. Each year now, prevailing Tradewinds bring massive quantities of dust from the ruin of that barren area all the way across the Atlantic and deposit it on United States and Mexico.

Meanwhile, acrid smoke from Canadian fires has been drifting as far south as new York City and Washington DC.

As Dylan wrote long ago, "When will they ever learn…"

This reads like a prophecy written in the dust of a civilization's collapse, perhaps not inappropriate for the times that we are living in since everything around us seems to be in decline. The sense of decay is palpable. Excellent.
