Disappointment Knows Not Anger
One’s daily life presents reminders
Of paths not taken.
There is no hiding
Behind the unexpressed disappointment.
Reverberations of what could have been
Is accompanied by the bitter taste of missed chances
Lingering like unripened fruit on my tongue.
The scent of rain on dry earth
Make for unique reminders
Of disappointments washing away
As if promises simply dissolved into the earth,
Leaving behind only the faintest trace of
Unfulfilled hope.
Manhattan high-rises cast shadows of yesterday
One the walls of memory.
Often sun reflections flicker off windows
Like old film reels projecting
Moment of almost…
Not quite.
At times,
The touch of a cool breeze
Brushes my face,
A gentle caress of what was lost,
That soft,
Yet persistent is its presence.
My nocturnal dreams
Dominated by the distant hum of silence,
The melody of words unspoken,
Regret’s pianissimo of hushed weeping.
Fortunately…
There is no anger,
Merely the soundless ache
Of what could have been a forever memory
Woven into a tapestry of perilless threads
And the gentle acceptance of disappointment
Giving a last reminder…
Everything is as it should be.
I recall one time when my younger brothers we're talking dismissively about me when my twin brother, Roger, who remembered so well, broke into the conversation and said, "Listen, you don't know Ron like I know Ron. He was better than you'll ever be. Just didn't get the chance."
I really appreciated him standing in for me. And now that I've written 16 books and Roger is still toying with his first, I feel better than ever about my life, my experiences, and its outcome so far. Like so many writers, I may become famous after I'm gone.
