Intrepid Heart

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Most of us have felt the anguish of disappointment and failure in our relationships. An even smaller number of us have had both the mental and physical impact on our heart, (Image by Odin AI)

 Intrepid Heart

A lover leaves,
Mortality’s pulse stutters in silence.

Grief presses against the ribs like a scalpel,
pausing the will to continue
as if the body itself questions its contract with breath.

beats, not because it is whole, but because it is enigmatic,

a personification of the mysterious.

There was a time…

ER prepared for mending a life’s fading cadence

In a chest split open with precision

as heart’s rhythm was held hostage by machines,

where each beat became a negotiation between life and steel.

Murmured words were exchanged between surgeons,

as if the exposed chambered walls might overhear the cautionary concern,

the motion of fragile maneuvers.

How heroic this heart of stalwart possession

holding fast once again

its rhythm without permission,
a surreal partnership with the mind,

a life’s dependency

on muscle and current,

tenaciously ever faithful.

I'm glad you focused on the physical characteristics of the stress of loss. It is a well known fact that stress causes what they call heart disease. Not a disease at all but a shortening of the number of beats that this amazing muscle will render before it can no longer do it.

The emotional heart does not reside in the chest put in the brain. Ironically, the emotional heart has a great effect on the beat and rhythm of the muscular heart. The brain requires fresh oxygenated blood from the heart to stay alive. When that blood supply is interrupted, the brain will fail along with the heart, its life blood.
