The Currency of Life

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Many believe that we are growing as a society of failure. Principles of humanness is getting pushed to the end of the line. “Wants” dominate the “Needs” of far too many ambitious beings.

 The Currency of Life

Many awake to chase gold.

Others wake to breathe in a new day.

Gratitude…

To have a roof that doesn’t leak.

A bowl that’s never empty.

A bed that holds our weight.

Such are the quiet riches

Many forget to count.

Clean water,

Not bottled brands,

But flowing clear as truth.

Food that nourishes,

Not dazzle.

Warmth in winter,

Tree shade in the summer

And a hand to hold

As the world forgets your name.

These are the needs…

Simple, sacred and often overlooked

Why do the WANTS whisper louder for some.

Gift or curse?

Newer,

Faster,

Shinier.

More.

More piles up like noise,

Cluttering the inner being

Until we mistake the echo for desire

For the voice of need.

We trade hours for things, trade peace for pace,

Trade presence for the illusion of progress.

What if…

The real currency wasn’t money,

Wasn’t stuff,

Wasn’t even time?

What if…

The true wealth was in the healthy senses,

Eyes that see the sky’s layers shift,

Ears that catch a distant child’s laugh,

Skin that feels the “somewhere” of a morning breeze,

A tongue that tastes a seasonal fruit,

The nose that remembers childhood campfires

And grandfather’s aromatic smores?

What if…

The price of life was simply

GRATITUDE?

Your ‘The Currency of Life’ is just what the doctor should be ordering. “Let’s get you started on a course of ‘Gratitude,’ t.i.d until gone. Unlimited refills.” I like how you point out “quiet riches” that many not only forget to count, but feel these basic things ‘don’t’ count at all. “As the world forgets your name.” It is accurate in referring to WANTS in all caps, for ‘wanting’ itself breezes past ‘need’, which bypasses gratitude. I remember a salon client I had 15 years ago, Virginia Little, who (during her manicure) used to have me retell how I met my husband, and she savored the story. Gratitude. I went to see her one last time after her massive stroke. She managed to say only one word as I squeezed her hand good-bye: “Appreciate.” “And a hand to hold/As the world forgets your name.” She died a few weeks later. Her name was Virginia Little. ~~ djl

An expression, a vision of return to the basics and the elemental in life as shelter, nourishment, warmth, connection and sheer sensory presence, finding simplicity, for example, rather than wealth. Very insightful..

From my travels in life, sometimes in need, I have found that people are generally very generous and good. While the breaking news would have us believe that the world is crumbling when it isn't if the facts are revealed. And not politically doctored.

But we are easily attracted to marketing that seeks to draw us in for a benefit that may not be there. And we have this tendency to believe that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence when it isn't.

Somehow, probably by mentoring, we have to show people that the best things in life are free. Truly free from all kinds of promotion and tricks of the trade of marketing.

Hopefully leaving the cults of wealth and power for the simple life of meeting only our basically needs and then just enjoying all the free things there are around us like the air.

This rings true in a beautiful way. Those little things in life is what it is all about.
