Checkmateing Kingly Torment

Arrogance of power, regardless of position, is perhaps the greatest weight that takes down the perpetrator. (Image by Odin AI)

 Checkmating Kingly Torment

The board is laid, not in marble halls

but on a kitchen floor where linoleum peels like old truths,

and pawns wear aprons,

briefcases,

collars,

sequined masks and crucifixes.

The King sits swollen in velvet rot,

his crown a rusted halo of unpaid debts and televised sermons.

He speaks in stock options and scripture,

his breath a cocktail of incense and ego.

His torment is legion.

In the home: he is the father who rules with silence,

whose love is a ledger,

whose children tiptoe like bishops diagonal through his moods.

In the office: he is the CEO with teeth of gold,

smiling through intimidations that bleed cities dry.

His knights are interns in tailored armor,

loyal to the bonus, not the blood.

In the church: he is the preacher with a voice like thunder,

but eyes like locked doors.

His rooks are doctrine, moving straight through doubt, never bending, never breaking.

In the state: he is the politician with a handshake like a mousetrap.

His pawns chant slogans,

march in circles, believing the board is freedom.

In the spotlight: he is the actor who plays himself, every role a mirror,

every line rehearsed in the echo chamber of applause and algorithm.

The chessboard pulses,

black and white squares like moral binaries,

but the pieces blur: a bishop with lipstick,

a rook with a riot shield,

a pawn with a poem tucked in its sleeve.

Allegiances fracture.

Some kneel out of habit.

Some out of hunger.

Some out of fear that the board will vanish if the king falls.

But the queen,

ah, the queen.

She moves like revolution,

like memory unshackled,

like a mother who’s had enough.

She circles him slowly, not with rage,

but with the quiet certainty of truth sharpening its blade.

The board grows colder.

The torches dim.

The pawns begin to hum a different tune,

one not written in royal ink.

And the king…

he feels it. The slow erosion of reverence.

The soft betrayal of silence.

The checkmate not shouted,

but whispered like a bedtime story rewritten by the children he forgot to love.

He will not fall in fire.

He will not fall in war.

He will fall in the stillness between two moves,

when the board no longer bends to his torment.

The crown rolls, not into another hand,

but into the dust where it belongs.

Inevitably, this checkmating kingly torment hurts most

the ones who whisper beneath the throne.

A powerful commentary on kingly behavior for our times. Remembering other kings and their times. While Britain still holds onto the myth rather than the reality. Turned into a tourist attraction.

The use of chess as an allegory is brilliant. And yes, our current king will probably drift off as an obscure, but painful period in the history of the United States – he and all of his minions one of the worst presidents ever and disillusioned followers.

the dominance of chess being played out on the kitchen floor "with peeling linoleum". What a striking image., such a powerful metaphor for the power structures that control political imaging and life at the present moment. A timely poem indeed.
