 Weathering Heart and Mind Differences

The heart arrives first,

barefoot, bleeding from gravel dreams,

its pulse a thunderhead rolling in from the distance,

charged with an electrical current that doesn’t ask permission to feel.

The mind follows,

synaptic sparks crackling like dry leaves in a wind that doesn’t know where to settle.

It measures the air, but cannot predict the storm that memory brews in silence.

They meet at the junction,

where lightning strikes the same experience twice as the lesson remains buried too deep beneath pride’s permafrost.

Forecasts fail here.

Avalanches of emotion and logic collapse together,

leaving aftermaths no science could chart,

only poets and survivors can identify the debris.

The heart wants to leap,

a kite in a gale,

its string frayed by longing and knotted with raw truth.

The mind builds scaffolding from consequence and cognitive support,

even as its acuity is often left exposed to the sheer honesty of the heart’s nakedness.

Rain begins,

not gentle, not forgiving,

but the kind that slaps rooftops like old arguments repeating themselves in thunderous dialects.

The rivalry is ancient,

sun and cloud,

truth and caution,

each demanding dominance when peace refuses to speak.

The heart shouts, “This storm is mine.  I know its rhythm, its ache, its flood.”

The mind blurts back, “But I know its aftermath of litter and ruins,

the silence, the cost of rebuilding.”

Disagreement prevents any surrender.

A crow circles overhead,

black punctuation against a gray sentence,

its cry a question neither can answer.

The wind shifts. The storm does not end, but it changes shape,

like forgiveness,

a possible compromise.

And for a moment,

the heart and mind share the same umbrella,

though it leaks from every seam.

Success…

Is the goal: not the kind of success that wears a suit or signs a mortgage,

but the warm environment where heart and mind coexist,

love one another,

and learn to dance in the rain.

Highly effective piece of tumultuous and profound language, Odin. Reviews here convey the effective delivery. I like the style; clusters of long and short lines. Details pack a punch: “barefoot, bleeding from gravel dreams.” — whose feet wouldn’t wince from reading that line? And “ only poets and survivors can identify the debris.” must sharply draw in the breath of those who read and write and soak in your words. Stanza 6 makes my eyes widen, I love it. Stanza 9 takes it and runs with that ‘raw truth’ of which you speak. Sharing the umbrella, that scene in this tempest storm of thrashing poetry, pulled down into leaking through the seams. I read the umbrella lines as the start of the finish….composure, which, calm-after-chaos-like, leaves us with a lifted face. Five Michelin stars, Odin***** ~~ djl. P.S. — magnificent AI art composition…the colors and contrast of enormous energy.

This is amazing. Great symbolism. We all seem to be caught in this storm of conflict these days!

Somehow the muscle it pumps our blood has become the center of emotion. Your prosetry, once again, flows beautifully into the conflict that rises in our minds between the two.

I believe you're right about the emotions taking over first when we are young and we haven't gathered enough experience to more systematically understand why we are feeling the way we are. With experience, the more structured and scientific mind takes over to complete the drama you have revealed.

The drama and tension that exists between the heart and mind (intellect) is an eternal conflict for the ages. The pulse of the heart as "thunderhead", Then the verse where the heart and mind "share the same umbrellas, though it leaks from every seam." The stanza on "avalanches of emotion and logic" that collapse together. Another striking image. Thought-provoking to say the very least.
