Lantern Beneath the Lake

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To address Nature as an all-consuming means for understanding the now and the then of time is to give it its broad-based credit. (Image by Odin AI)

 Lantern Beneath the Lake

How violent Nature’s birth of breath,
like a moth erupting from a cathedral of forever,

lungs unfurling as stained glass wings

shattering the silence of forgetfulness.

Memory’s past began like fog on a reflection,

 soft breath pressed against glass,

a ghost of intention smudged by gathered time.

Awareness once stood like a lighthouse on the edge of thought,

its beam sweeping the dark waters of sensation,

but now a flickering bulb,

a moth of time trapped inside the lens.

Holding becomes a cracked creation of Nature,

leaking attention into one’s soil of forgetting.

Intention curls inward,

a fern folding at dusk,

while perception drifts like ash from a fire long extinguished.

Sensation is becoming a whisper in a room of echoes,

like a feather dropped in a canyon of silence,

the marrow of mountainous surroundings

becomes as the rain that dreams of drowning,

as the crow that baptizes itself in ashes,

as the ant who carries the weight

of empires in a single grain of sugar,

Man’s response stumbles like a marionette,

its strings tangled in the roots of yesterday.

Still…

Just as the last thread frays,

a ripple stirs the lakebed.

Atop the silt,

a lantern, long buried,

rises and ignites its flame,

reminding us that the light is cyclic,

seldom lost,

only waiting.

The fog lifts unexpectedly,

the not forgotten being of swirling senses, yours,

floats as the tenacious arc in rebirth,

bowing in remembrance.

I believe the whole piece is a metaphor for the spark of memory re-emerging from deep as we age and forgetting and confusion often affect our daily thoughts.

It's that light that comes from somewhere that keeps us going and accomplishing new things from what we need from the memory of the old.

Well, Odin, I’ve been away too long. I seem to have developed ‘reader’s gout,’ and your language in this and your ‘Weathering Heart…’ has activated the Tylenol in me. Hurricanification in your offerings whip up my attention center and the weather station is on high alert. I’m pretty alarmed these days by what is happening to us all and the happenings warrant what you are writing, even as they take my pencil away from me. I’m grateful for your artform, your ability to put out here nourishment for those of us looking for soul food to sooth our aching bellies that need to leave the headlines on the plate, unconsumable, indigestable as they have become. The wretchedness we are daily aware of is what chases me back here, where sense is found in ‘the arts,’ just like Nancy Pelosi said way back then….’the arts will save us.’ Thank you for continuing to toss the life rings, Odin. You and Ron and John are on the boat off which I fell overboard lately. I’ll reel in and toss some rings myself when I can. Thank you & carry the flame ~~ djl

The lantern beneath the lake, indeed lost nowadays but still waiting to be found. Some stark images here suggesting a kind of weight to existence, including "feathers in silence, rain that dreams of drowning, crows in ashes, ants bearing empires." Only at the end of the poem comes a sense of rebirth with the return of the lantern" "just as the last thread frays, a ripple stirs the lakebed" followed by "the light is cyclic, seldom lost, only waiting." Reminding us that the light is never extinguished, just waiting to be rekindled.
