Above and Below New Year's Eve

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With New Year’s eve upon us, it’s hard to not think of the Manhattan Ball Drop and the ubiquitous late-night subway system to the far reaches of Long Island. Such far-away-reaches remain what it has always been, uniquely vacuous, yet with the ability to soothe one’s feeling of aloneness when focus is brought to the often elusive company of the 5 senses. But of course, one has to will those senses awake sometimes. (Image by Odin AI

Above and Below New Year’s Eve

TOPSIDE

Thousands vacate the Times Square footprint,

Ruch off to their favorite bar,

Their much-anticipated party,

Their moment of raucous silence,

When frivolous thrills promise

Left-over take-home portions of

Infatuation’s roar of hope.

Across the sidewalks and pedestrian paths

They rush to the next fix,

Panic laying in wait

Should the remaining hours of a celebratory reverberation

Prove a disappointing aftermath,

Knowing one’s hangover becomes

The evening’s determined moment of reality.

UNDERSIDE

A non-reveler on a Far-Rockaway subway platform

Peers into a deep tunnel’s darkness,
Dirt and ammonia wafting their
Ancient odors of industry
Along tracks rumbling,
Tunnel wind rushing forward,
Raising anticipation,
Quivering the space in front of him,
Breakneck thunder coming to a stop
Inches from his face.

Stepping inside an empty car,

The submarine-like air

Tastes of hunger unabated,
Illumined metal radiates fluorescent green
Embellishing his ride through darkness
To somewhere… anywhere.

Such is his subway of grace,
Enfolding him with intimate anonymity
As his identity remains unknown.

Dawn approaches,

Taking the train into Manhattan

And honesty’s raucous silence atop the island of rock.

How arresting as everyday life returns,

Bringing with it reality and the simple pleasure

Of a bagel and cream cheese,

A sip of coffee,

A smile for its own sake,

The ah-ha of another day

Living atop and below the lessons to learn,

Wisdom to acquire,

And hopefully…

The harmonious silence of inner peace.

An insiders' view of what it's like after the ball drops in Times Square and everyone disperses. And then the very poignant station and subway imaging on the far Rockaway line. Cool.

My only ride on the Amtrak on the eve of Thanksgiving from Penn Station, was that the car was packed and the stale heat was unbearable as well as the smoke drifting in the air from smokers. Glad to get off at Trenton.

ah, the topside, that we have just passed through last night, frantic, indeed intoxicating in this illusory celebration of joy for the new year. Then the underside, stripped down to a subway platform, for a view of another anonymous, a kind of everyman person. Finally, at the end, in the season of new hope, a sip of coffee, bagel and cream cheese, and yes a smile. Perhaps that is enough to start the new year after the raucous midnight celebrations have ended.
