Platonic Intimacy

Might intimacy equated by flesh and unrestrained passion be selling short the magic of platonic intimacy? (IMAGE BY ODIN AI)

Poem Artwork

 Platonic Intimacy

We begin in the hard light,
voices edged like winter air,
eyes sliding away before they truly land.
A handshake that feels like unmixed paint,
thin, unfinished.
and you feel yourself folding inward,
a shutter clicking closed
to keep the draft out.

Then…

Warmth breaks through, quiet as dawn.
A bowl placed before you,
steam unfurling like a soft invitation;
your shoulders drop
before you notice they were raised.
Someone gathers the papers you spill,
their touch steady, unhurried,
an ordinary grace that startles you
into remembering you’re human.
A puppy’s quivering hope,
a kitten’s small motor of trust
vibrating against your palm,
each one a reminder
that tenderness doesn’t need permission.

And then…

The smallest gesture:
a kind word,
fallen into the space between people
like a pebble into a still pond,
sending rings of intimacy
outward, outward,
until they reach someone
who lifts their head,
blinks,
and smiles
without knowing why—
only that something soft
has found them.

Yes…

There might come that time

when almost nothing but
a single kind word,
so light it barely disturbs the air,
yet it lands inside you
with the weight of recognition.
A gesture like a quiet bell rung far away,
its vibrations traveling outward
until finding a heart open enough to hear.

No thanks required,
only the spontaneous, unguarded smile
of someone who has just felt
the warmth of finally being seen,

the magic of platonic intimacy.

You made me think of my father. Never met anyone he didn't like. I guess I picked that up from him. You also reminded me of some roommates. Guys. We clicked and got along great together without any homosexual tendencies at all.

I guess they call it agape, this form of platonic intimacy that you're writing about. If everyone had it, it would be a much better world.

Some marvellous lines in this poem on platonic love. "Tenderness doesn't need permission" strikes a cord of particularly unexpected intimacy and goes well with the idea of platonic love. Intimacy without the lust. "Smiles without knowing why", a smile unburdened by thought or analysis, just simple joy that needs no accounting. Lovely.
