Self-Centered Destructionism
I.
The sky heaves like a lung struggling for breath,
its exhale a red horizon where wildfires
chew mountains down to their bone.
Floodwaters muscle through towns
as if rivers have grown impatient
with the scaffolding of our ambitions.
We pretend resilience is victory,
but every storm that learns our name
is a reminder that the planet keeps score
whether we are paying attention or not.
II.
In the wires beneath our fingertips,
truth splinters into a kaleidoscope
of curated illusions.
Misinformation spreads like mold
across the beams of shared understanding,
a sweetness on the air
just before the wood gives way.
AI-driven shadows mimic familiar voices,
stroking our certainty
even as they hollow it out.
We scroll, unaware we are breathing in
the spores of our own unmaking.
III.
Democracy trembles like a bridge
with hairline fractures,
each step of mistrust sending tremors
through its tired spine.
Borders blur as people seek
firmer ground than representation
eroding like chalk in relentless rain.
The world reconfigures itself
in chaotic tessellations,
pieces shifting too quickly
for any single pattern
to offer comfort or coherence.
IV.
And still the hourglass tilts,
cosmic fingers turning it
as if to whisper, Wake now.
Nature hums its old, unbroken warning,
our machines hum their new, uneasy one,
the frequencies merging into a single tremor
that threads beneath our feet.
If consciousness is a flower,
ours droops in blue‑light glow,
yet even wilt can seed uprising
if we dare to bloom differently
than the algorithms expect.
V.
Yet beneath the ash and static,
something luminous gathers,
a pulse like green shoots
pushing through scorched soil.
Hope arrives quietly,
a gentle straightening of the human spine,
a hand reaching toward another hand
before reaching for the screen.
In that simple, defiant gesture
the world remembers how to heal,
and we remember
that awakening is not a miracle,
it is a choice made daily
by even one mind refusing to sleep further.
