A Leaf, A Life, An Epiphany

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

From the hot breath aboard Airforce One to the hearing room where a cool and collected testimony is heard, the citizenry, like Nature, have just so much time to be realized before storm season arrives again in November. Below is a revised poem I wrote some time ago, but today, its upgrade is in keeping with Nature’s path and the path of Democracy.

A Leaf, A Life, An Epiphany

A tree flinches.
A country does the same.
both unsure how much more wind they can take.

A leaf holds still,
Listening for danger in its own trembling.
No rustling.
No celebration.
Not yet.
Cold mornings are returning.

People are the same.
Preparing.
Hesitating.
Their doubts shuffled like blunt blades
in the cards of a rigged game.

Silence settles, the kind before a verdict.

Birds wait.
We wait.
Knowing that refusing to rise is its own slow fall.

Leaf to leaf,
Citizen to citizen,
Time pushes hard.

Storms test everything.
Most fall.
Some cling.
Not to be mulch.
Not to be forgotten.
But to hold on one moment longer.

A near-bare twig with a single leaf.
One choice,
One voice,
One vote still matters.

Courage or surrender.
That is the narrow edge on which November balances.

September song, moved back a couple of months. A beautiful allegory using the coming of winter storms the signal the changes brought about by the November elections.

While democracy was defined by Plato in The Republic, it has been only 250 years since the idea has been codified in a country's government. And the arc of history shows us that democracy is winning over the world, one autocracy after another. But it takes time for the people to realize that democracy is the best way to govern.

The lesson of 1929 is upon us. When the wealthy try to run the United States by their supposed superior methods the country for and by the people will always respond towards democracy and reject autocracy. It's happening in Iran right now, and will in the United States next November.

Your poem has quiet, insistent power. The way you parallel the trembling of a leaf with the unease of a nation is so relevant to today's situation, as if the natural world and the civic world share the same pulse. The poem seems to hold its breath—those pauses, that waiting—until the single leaf becomes a symbol of endurance and power. The closing lines not dramatic, but honest about the narrow edge we all stand on. "Courage or surrender. That is the narrow edge on which November balances." Indeed.
