Continuance (redux)

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Today’s world works hard at preaching fear and ending of civilization as we kno it. I was compelled to read a poem I wrote some time ago. Perhaps today it is more relevant. Some of us think a great deal about beginnings and ends

 Continuance

Peering back at the shadow stretching
Continuance knows well the peaceful silhouettes from horizon's light
Ancestral sequence having frequented this shore many times

All is as it has been
On so many such occasions
Sequestered driftwood blanketed by sand
Isolated fingers protruding in protest
Remain unready to move on
Just yet

Sand pipers scavenging
Wet bubbles along the beach
Furtively run zigs and zags
Avoiding swooping wings overhead
A termination they too are not ready to embrace
Just yet

All is as it has been
Even the familiar rumble of distant truck engines
Downshifting for the long pull over the hill
Carrying essential goods of all kinds
Sustainment of another kind
People not at the end
Just yet

Destiny laps the shore
Its gentle hands tugging
Nature's ancient endurance
Into warm waters
This once mighty limb-strength
Resistance to wind and temperatures
Readies again for the next beginning

Ahead

White caps thunder applause
As the elongated shade of remaining branches
Fades into the day's dusk and disappears
Signaling a tide ready to lift
To carry forth and beyond

The roots have withered
Growth's ever-changing leaves and bark
Have become enjoined morsels of Nature's love and care
Whispers from the past
Mixing peacefully
As ghostly remnants

The water rises
The fiber and strands of resistance
Soften to dissolve into a new connection
As birth's salt and brine prepare the next iteration
A final surge upward
A lift of wave and purpose
Exploding its final power
Into a mist imploring remembrance
Before the oneness of completion
Cycles again into its new inception

So begins another never-ending completion
The drifting of a tree we might meet again
Beneath another shore's migrating sands
Readying still further preparation
To unfold the essence
Into yet another origin

Such is the gift of time
The requisite condition for continuance
Where existence once created
Evolves unfettered
In perpetuity

What a tapestry of images and instances of ‘Continuance’! For me, reading this gave me the feeling of ‘being’ at the sea shore; the sound of wind, of tiny bubbles popping, fizzing, fibers softening, seaweed swishing into the float of incoming…stanza #8 bringing the salt, sound, and burst of energy. Mentioning the migrating sand puts the continuance into the microscopic drift and wash and repeat and travel….time and perpetuity. Uplifting contribution today and thank you for it, Odin* ~~ djl

As it's been proffered.... time, like a river, flows ever onward, carrying us forward. Seems time remains one of the greatest mysteries in our short lives, being simultaneously fleeting, seemingly infinite, and immeasurable. Death being a spiritual confrontation; (despite all mankind's musings) we will certainly have a lot clearer understanding after we pass on than we do now. Despite how creative minds construe 'continuance' and 'perpetuity', the most important thing is to leave behind love, for it is a quiet flame that no time or distance can extinguish. Enjoyed your thoughts. Nice image. Peace... rlc

Your poem covers the long haul. The geological change that the Earth undergoes with humans only a very small part of life on earth that continues after mass extinctions of the past.

While the perils to human existence tend to grow with scientific knowledge both understanding them and coming up ways to create new ones or to counter them, like changing the course of asteroids on a course to hit the planet, proven recently.

Merely going back a century, we see Europe in turmoil and rivalry between China and Japan resulting in Japan becoming the most aggressive country in Asia like England was the century before. The result was to horrendous world wars with a great depression in between. This century also has its wars, pandemics and perils, like global warming. But most of the world is leaning in the right direction. Unfortunately, not the USA.

A quiet counterweight to the noise of our moment in time in today's world. The shoreline both witness and teacher—showing that what looks like an ending is often just another turn in an ancient cycle. The driftwood, the sandpipers, even the rumble of distant engines all carry that same message: nothing is finished, only in process. The closing movement is especially moving. "Such is the gift of time." Bravo, well executed.
