Twinges of Panic

She absorbed his warmth, and the smell of his affections,
as he pulled her ever so close-
He knew her fears; Those she never spoke-
So he hugged her even tighter- Not wanting
to ever let go- and in his heart, he never would

Watching him walk away, was like blade sharp
talons scraping across a phantom blackboard-
She wanted to reach out and grab his hand; Demanding
his return to her side-
She didn’t want to let him go, and in her heart,
she never would

Teary eyed, she had to stay until his frame seemed to be
swallowed by darkness-
Twinges of panic; “ Did I tell him, I loved him? “
She knew she had, but she wanted to say it,
Say it one more time

A Soldier’s wife; she couldn’t have been prouder;
Prouder of him, or his honorable duty-
But she looked in the mirror every day he was gone-
Searching for the look; The look of her Mother-
Oh it wasn’t age; Lines nor creases-
Her fading beauty wasn’t on her mind-
No, no she was looking for that painstaking gleam,
The one her Mother had carried, since the year of ‘68

She wanted to reach out and grab his hand; Demanding
his return to her side-
She didn’t want to let him go, and in her heart,
she never would

Excellent tribute to the soldiers and their loved ones.

How well I know this feeling, Lisa. Your words mirrored my heart on may an occasion when someone I love has headed off to battle or assignments unknown; we just never know if we will see them again and the fervent prayers begin. A piece of us goes with them and we never get it back. Perhaps the most difficult job in the military is being a soldier's/sailor's wife.
Take care,

This very heartfelt write is a reminder of the days when one of us had to go and all those terrible days before and during the deployment into a war zone. You have expressed the turmoil of emotions perfectly in this brilliant write.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! I know that painful, dreaded feeling! I felt that same horrid agony when my husband of seven months was sent to war! What a heartfelt and well written poem!

I remember my new husband being shipped out overseas three weeks after our marriage. Thankfully, it was not to war and I joined him
2 months later. The pang I felt in my heart must be multiplied ten-fold by a wife who may be saying a last good-bye! My mother was spared the heartache of Vietnam. My eldest brother joined the Army Reserves. The second eldest was deferred for medical reasons, her third and fourth sons too young. But she did endure separation from my dad during his stint with the USN in WW2. She followed him to Providence, RI Where he was first stationed and then saw him off to a tour of Africa, pregnant with her first child and praying he'd be allright. That pic is heartbreaking--the look on both the woman's and father's faces. I can feel that embrace. Incredible write that cuts to the heart, Lisa...

You are the best tribute to a soldier your country has ever produced and I say that in all honesty, when I read one of your war poems my heart clenches with the stab of pain for their sacrifices. Once again well done dear friend.
