If I had three wishes
I would not wish for wealth
I would not wish for health
I would not wish a thing for me
And nothing more for you.
I might wish something for us
For more patience
More understanding
More compassion
But probably not.
If life is a testing ground
Why would I want to make it easier?
If you and I need to learn from our mistakes
Why would I want less of them?
If we must experience the bad
In order to appreciate the good
Then bad at least serves a purpose
Not to our character or desires
But to our goals.
So who am I to change the terrain
Without putting in the effort?
If all flaws all shortcomings and
All hardships are part of a Grand Design
That demand work effort and mental exertion
To overcome them
Then I suppose all I could in good conscience ask for
Are the stamina to last the journey
The will to change it
The strength to change it
And the resolve to see it through.
But if deep down I believe I already have those traits
Perhaps I should only stop wishing
And get about the task of doing.
