Life is a gamble
In a thousand different ways
We make ourselves vulnerable
To Nature’s forces and to man’s—
Nature being the stronger
While man’s is sinister and evil.
Yet in the main we sidestep tragedies
Until that single moment
Thrust upon us by pomp or circumstance
Without warning
We are trapped
And with each movement
We sink deeper.
Caught and held
With five times our strength
And left to wither and to die.
With no star to guide us
And no outstretched hand to help
We are left alone.
The compacted sand around our legs
Is unrelenting
Defying and mocking us
Until…
In a moment of supreme
Enlightenment
We wiggle our toes
And we find wiggle room
And so we quicken our wiggle
And then we wiggle and squirm
And in a glorious thrust
We pop up and out
To safety.
But what did we learn?
The world is no safer
And we are still vulnerable.
Perhaps…
Whether we win or lose
‘Tis better to fight
In any way we can
To the bitter end
Than to just give up
And quit.
Yes, the fighter spirit is there in all of us , we need to use it, found in reserve.! Most people go thru it in life at some point or the other. Those who don't were simply born with a diamond spoon

A fine allegory for life. How a little "wiggle room" can make the difference and allow us to escape something dreadful that is come upon us. And wise advice at the end.
This poem meant a lot to me tonight because I can relate to every line. I'm glad I read it because I needed to. Your words speak to a lot of us who need some encouragement. Whether uphill or down the fight for life survives even in the most difficult times.
