Sensations

Do emotions tell us more about ourselves
or the world around us?
Does it matter?
Sensations take the world that we think we know
away from the scientist and those who
merely observe and measure and give it to
the artist, the poet, the musician, the actor, or the interpreter in us.
When we hear a beautiful composition rendered
to us by way of an orchestra who thinks of
vibrations on a thousand different tympanic membranes?
Not me.
I am whisked off into another world
wrapped in moods and thoughts and
delights far beyond my ears.

Only our brains can take bits of
sensory data and process them as feelings of love
or hate, din or melodies, exciting scents or
stinky stuff, things cold and distant, or those that
exude warmth and coziness.
We smile our approval or frown as those
inputs stimulate or clash with our sensibilities.

Science has its place but only the
artist can cultivate meaning across vast dimensions
of consciousness that let us live, love, or find happiness,
joy, anticipation, honesty, or deception.

Science instructs but we are in awe of the
of the emotional world that we know intuitively as
our own stored experiences.
