Lost Identity

It is so easy to ask
Who am I?
But surface facts do not
Always reveal the truth
And truth does not always reveal
The motivation or the agony
That confront the thing wished for but
Not yet found.

Pain and suffering often
Collude to hide where we are
In our journey
And what we seek to find
They impede our vision
And the good that we can do.

Whether chance or choice
Guide us
Outcomes are unknown
Destinations unclear
Distractions are rampant
Temptations persist.

Must we make a thousand journeys
Just to remove obstacles and
Unmask a thousand desires
Only to find
We have built a fortress
Against ourselves?
And still we cannot see
And still we do not know
What looms ahead
In our search to know
Who we are.

I think it is constantly changing who we really are as we age. Our ideas and ideals change

This thoughtful poem, written with such clarity and unwavering honesty, made me think of a quote from the 10/9/2011 Globe and Mail obituary for Nova Scotian poet, Maxine Tynes:

“Women are always looking into mirrors, looking for a mirror to look into, or thinking about, regretting, sighing over or not quite believing what they’ve seen in the mirror. We’re looking at ourselves; looking for ourselves. The girls we were, the women we are, and what we will become. Searching, always searching in mirrors."

Very well done!

Finally finding out who you are is one fine time. A brief transition and there you are! It's like you weren't even looking and all of a sudden you suddenly know. Kinda freaky!

Love ya!

Oh, that "thousand journeys," would be in the millions. It would be in the millions, because I would be forgetful and would have to begin all over from the start.

Very well put. The question of identity of self is a long and arduous one, as you say, a thousand journeys and still we don't know. Even if we think we know, we may be kidding outselves, since tomorrow arrives and we change and are again different. Thanks for raising this important again to set us thinking. John
