Where are the Heroes?

There is a lot of poverty in the world. Just 46 individuals have more wealth that one-half the inhabitants of Planet Earth. The wealthy have shown that they do not care. That means the rest of us must work to solve many of the problems of poverty. There are only a few organizations at work to help bring about change. They are staffed by the brave, the few, the heroes. We need many more.

Where Are the Heroes?

Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.
--Horace Mann, First President, Antioch College, Ohio

All dressed up in our Sunday best
A handsome sight to see
Standing tall in reverential awe
But not on bended knee.
Close by a hymnal
Neatly tucked behind a wooden pew
Reserved for those who praise the Lord
The brave, the proud, the few?

Maybe.

Beyond the stain of sin and glass
Across the land and sea
There weeps a mother
Who wants only rest—or death
Where darkness sets her free;
Free from hunger dirt and grime
A drink of water a morsel of food
Not for self but for her children three.

Around the globe where temperatures climb
And coastal waters rise
And food supplies recede
The rich get richer
The poor get poorer
Who cares about their needs?

They say there’s a time for everything
Under the sun
A time to sow a time to reap
A time to pray a time to weep
A time to build a wall
To save us from the worst of all
The fight for dignity.

There needs to be a complete change if humanity is to survive. The hypocrisy of the wealthy is sickening. 'Why don't those people just make more effort?' 'Pull themselves up by their bootstraps'. People aren't owed anything (except the super-rich), after all, they're self-sufficient. The fact that they can keep going with the huge tax advantages they get is nothing really, is it? So they go to church to consort with, the people to impress, people just like them. Don't they just ooze their self-satisfaction, as they inherit the world.

The fight for dignity, yes, the most valuable and legitimate, in my opinion. The rest doesn't make sense, if we accept and turn a blind eye. Thank you for reminding your readers!

A beautifully written noble poem about a noble cause that too few of the superrich care about. Many of them make their billions off the backs of the poor.

But I believe that the Gates foundation has a goal of ending poverty in Africa. And Warren Buffett has untwisted a number of billionaires to join him in giving away their legacy rather than passing it on down to unworthy relatives.

The sad truth of humanity. The brave are those who help others and not themselves. In a perfect world, the brave would be the ones rewarded and not the unworthy few.

Such a powerful, apt, timely, meaningful, and compassionate poem, Edward. You state truly tragic facts about this chaotic world seemingly intent upon destroying itself. Love and peace to you,

Regis.

Your words put forth a stark reality, Edward! It's greed gone crazy! People want power but that woman wants so little, "Not for self but for her children three."!! Oh, the woe of that scene! You really got me with this one, hon!!

Love ya!

Your poem is heart warming today dear Edward. There are so many suffering from hunger and poverty, wish we can alleviate their pain somehow. Loved your Human message here. Thank you for sharing.

This was just excellent. 5 stars. I don;t know where the heroes are, but I know where they aren't.
